Questions & Answers about Meidän ei tarvitse varata samaa juhlapaikkaa yksille etkoille ja kaksille jatkoille.

Why are the numbers for one and two in the plural form (yksille, kaksille)?
The words for pre-party (etkot) and afterparty (jatkot) are plural-only words. When you count plural-only nouns, the number has to agree with them by also being in the plural. Since we are saying for one pre-party and for two afterparties, both the numbers and the nouns take the plural allative case ending -ille.
How do you form the plural cases for a number like kaksi?
To decline numerals in the plural, you use their plural stem. For kaksi, the stem is kaks-, to which you add the plural marker -i- and the case ending. Here, we add the allative ending -lle, making kaksille. Similarly, the plural stem of yksi is yks-, becoming yksille.
Why is the object samaa juhlapaikkaa in the partitive case?
This is a great refresher on object rules. Normally, affirmative necessity verbs like tarvitsee or täytyy take an object in the nominative-like basic form. However, because this is a negative sentence (ei tarvitse), the object must be in the partitive case, just as it is in almost all negative Finnish sentences.
What exactly are etkot and jatkot?
These are very common colloquial terms in Finnish party culture. Etkot relates to being beforehand and means a pre-party where people gather before the main event. Jatkot comes from the verb jatkaa (to continue) and means the afterparty. Both words are pluralia tantum, meaning they are only ever used in the plural.
