Why do we have both the restrictive marker -i and the definite object marker râ on the word no-âvari (innovation)?
When a noun is described by a relative clause starting with ke, Farsi often attaches the restrictive suffix -i to the head noun. Even though it translates to "the" innovation in English, this -i acts as a pointer meaning "the specific one [that...]". Because the whole phrase is the direct object of the verb dust dâri (you like), the object marker râ must follow the noun and its restrictive -i, giving us no-âvari-i râ ke.
How do you pronounce نوآوریای, and why is there an extra ای added to the base word?
It is pronounced no-âvari-i. The base word for innovation is no-âvari, which ends in the vowel sound i. When we add the restrictive suffix -i, we need to separate the two identical vowel sounds. In writing, Farsi does this by adding an isolated alef and ye (ای), or sometimes a ye with a small hamza on top, to represent the glide between the vowels.
Could we put râ at the very end of the relative clause instead, like no-âvari-i ke mo'arrefi kardand râ...?
