Why does the negative prefix go on کردیم instead of انتخاب?
انتخاب کردن is a compound verb, meaning it is made of a noun (انتخاب, meaning choice) and a helping verb (کردن, to do). In Farsi, you only make the helping verb negative. So you add the negative prefix ن to کردیم to make انتخاب نکردیم (we did not choose).
How exactly is the word نکردیم built?
It follows the rule for the negative simple past: na- + past stem + ending. We start with the negative prefix ن (na-), add the past stem of the verb to do which is کرد (kard), and finish with the ending for we which is یم (-im). Put them together and you get نکردیم (nakardim).
Why is there an extra ی attached to the end of خانه?
That is the Ezafe linking sound, which connects a noun to an adjective. Because خانه (house) ends in a silent h that sounds like an e, we need to add a y sound to link it smoothly to بزرگ (big). In writing, we show this by adding the letter ی to the end of the noun.
Why does the direct object marker را come after بزرگ instead of right after the word for house?
The word را marks the entire specific object of the sentence, not just the main noun. Because the whole phrase آن خانهی بزرگ (that big house) is the thing being chosen, را goes at the very end of that complete phrase.
