Questions & Answers about مرد بیمار باید امروز دارو بخرد.
Why does the verb at the end start with "be-" instead of "mi-"?
Because of the word bâyad (must). In Farsi, when you use bâyad, the main action verb that follows it goes into the subjunctive mood. For most verbs, this means replacing the normal continuous prefix mi- with the subjunctive prefix be-. So, mikharad (he buys) becomes bekharad when it follows a modal verb.
Does the word "bâyad" change depending on who is doing the action?
No, bâyad is an impersonal verb, which means its form stays exactly the same no matter who the subject is. You show who has to do the action by changing the personal ending on the main verb at the very end of the sentence. Here, the -ad ending on bekharad tells us "he" (the sick man) is the one who must buy.
How do we link "mard" (man) and "bimâr" (sick) together?
We use the Ezâfe. Even though it is not written in the Farsi script here, there is a short "e" sound connecting the noun to its adjective. You pronounce it as mard-e bimâr.
Why isn't there a "râ" after "dâru" (medicine)?
We only use the direct object marker râ when the object is specific and definite, like "the medicine" or "that medicine". Since the man is just buying "medicine" in general, it is indefinite, so we don't use râ.
