Questions & Answers about او کارت ندارد و من ایدهی جدید ندارم.
How is the negative formed for دارم and دارد in this sentence?
To make the verb "to have" negative, we just add the prefix na- to the beginning. So, dârad (he/she has) becomes nadârad (he/she does not have), and dâram (I have) becomes nadâram (I do not have). Notice it doesn't use the nemi- prefix that most other verbs use in the present tense!
Why does the word for idea, ایده, have a ی at the end in ایدهی جدید?
That is the Ezâfe! When connecting a noun to an adjective (like "idea" to "new"), Farsi links them. Because ایده (ide) ends in a vowel sound, we must add a "ye" sound to link it to جدید (jadid), which is written here with the letter ی.
The English translation says "a card" and "a new idea", but I don't see the word for "a" (یک) in the Farsi sentence. Why?
In Farsi, when you are talking generally about not having something, you don't need to use "a" or "one" (yek). Saying کارت ندارد simply means "he doesn't have a card" or "he doesn't have cards" in a general sense.
Are کارت and ایده loanwords? They sound just like English!
Yes! کارت (kârt) comes from the French/English "card" or "carte", and ایده (ide) comes from the French "idée" (idea). Modern Farsi borrows many words from European languages, making these vocabulary words very easy to remember.
