Permission (ejâze dâdan / dâshtan)

To express what you can or cannot do, use the noun اجازه (permission) alongside the verbs داشتن (to have) and دادن (to give).

Having Permission

To say someone is allowed to do something, use اجازه داشتن (to have permission). Because permission refers to a potential action, the second verb takes the subjunctive mood, connected by که (that):

[Conjugated اجازه داشتن] + که + [Present Subjunctive]

Subject & Verb 1ConnectorVerb 2 (Subjunctive)
اجازه دارم (I am allowed)که (that)بروم (I go)
اجازه ندارند (They are not allowed)که (that)بیایند (they come)

Giving Permission

To say someone allows an action, use اجازه دادن (to give permission). To specify who receives the permission, introduce them with the preposition به (to).

[Conjugated اجازه دادن] + (به + Person) + که + [Present Subjunctive]

Verb Tenses and Permission

The second verb (the action being allowed) must remain in the Present Subjunctive. However, the first verb (giving or having permission) can be conjugated in any tense depending on when the permission was given.
