Negative present perfect (na-)

When a home renovation project is dragging on, you need a way to talk about what hasn't been done yet. For this, we use the negative present perfect tense.

Forming the Negative Present Perfect

To make the present perfect negative, attach the negative prefix نـ (na-) to the past participle. The present perfect endings remain the same.

For example, خریده‌ام (I have bought) becomes نخریده‌ام (I have not bought).

For compound verbs, only the verbal part (such as کردن) takes the negative prefix.

The Third-Person Singular

Remember that the third-person singular uses the separate word است instead of a connected ending. The negative prefix still attaches directly to the past participle.

Not "Yet" Finished

You will frequently see the negative present perfect paired with هنوز to emphasize that a task is still incomplete.
