Manifestation Nouns: Past Stem + ار
In Farsi, you can create abstract nouns that express the manifestation, result, or concept of an action by adding the suffix ار to the past stem of a verb. To find the past stem, simply drop the final ن from the infinitive.
| Infinitive | Past Stem | Noun | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| رفتن (to go) | رفت | رفتار | behavior |
| دیدن (to see) | دید | دیدار | visit / meeting |
| گفتن (to say) | گفت | گفتار | speech |
| کردن (to do) | کرد | کردار | action / deed |
| نوشتن (to write) | نوشت | نوشتار | writing |
| ساختن (to build) | ساخت | ساختار | structure |
| خواستن (to want) | خواست | خواستار | requester / seeking |
These nouns are often used in formal or professional contexts, such as when a mystery shopper evaluates a business. Here is how you can use them to describe a visit and the staff's behavior:
| I started the secret visit to the store. | من دیدار مخفیانه از فروشگاه را شروع کردم.man didâr makhfiyâne az forushgâh râ shoru' kardam. |
| The staff's behavior was very professional. | رفتار کارکنان خیلی حرفهای بود.raftâr-e kârkonân kheyli herfe'i bud. |
You will frequently see these nouns used to review communication, actions, and structures:
| The staff's speech with the buyer was bad. | گفتار کارکنان با خریدار بد بود.goftâr kârkonân bâ kharidâr bad bud. |
| Their action was not like their speech. | کردار آنها مثل گفتار آنها نبود.kerdâr-e ânhâ mesl-e goftâr-e ânhâ nabud. |
| The structure of this writing is very confusing. | ساختار این نوشتار خیلی گیجکننده است.sâxtâr in neveshtâr kheyli gijkonande ast. |
While most of these words act as standard abstract nouns, خواستار (from the verb "to want") often functions like an active participle, describing someone who is "seeking" or "requesting" something:
| Some of the customers are seeking a discount. | بعضی از مشتریها خواستار تخفیف هستند.ba'zi az moshtari-hâ khâstâr-e takhfif hastand. |
Evaluating a Store
When completing a performance report, you will also need specific vocabulary to review the store's operations. Two essential words are بازخورد (feedback) and کاستی (shortcoming or deficiency).
| They must pay attention to the customers' feedback. | آنها باید به بازخورد مشتریها توجه کنند.ânhâ bâyad be bâzkhord moshtari-hâ tavajjoh konand. |
| I wrote all the shortcomings in the report. | من همهی کاستیها را در گزارش نوشتم.man hame-ye kâsti-hâ râ dar gozâresh neveshtam. |
