Emphatic demonstratives (hamân-i ke)

Emphatic Demonstrative Pronouns

In Farsi, you already know the demonstratives این (this) and آن (that). To emphasize them, you add the prefix همـ, creating همین (this very/exact) and همان (that very/exact).

To use these emphatic demonstratives independently as pronouns meaning "this very one" or "that exact one," attach the suffix ی. This gives you همینی and همانی.

Pointing Out "The Very One That"

When you want to specify exactly which item or person you mean, you can make these independent pronouns the head of a relative clause. Just follow them with the relative word که (who/that).

  • همانی که (the very one who/that)
  • همینی که (this very one who/that)

Using Emphatic Demonstratives as Direct Objects

If "the exact one" acts as the definite direct object in the main sentence, it must take the direct object marker را. The را is placed right after the pronoun and before که.

  • همانی را که (the exact one that...)
  • همینی را که (this exact one that...)

Following Prepositions

These independent pronouns function just like regular nouns, meaning they can easily serve as the object of a preposition. Simply place the preposition (like روی، با, or به) directly before the emphatic pronoun.
