Contrasting actions (dar hâli ke)

When visiting the barber (آرایشگر), you often need to describe contrasting styles. To contrast two opposing facts or simultaneous actions, Farsi uses the subordinating conjunction در حالی که (while / whereas).

Unlike hypothetical conditions that require the subjunctive, در حالی که is used to state real facts or ongoing actions. Because these are actual events, the verbs in both halves of the sentence stay in indicative tenses (such as the present simple or present perfect).

Expressing Contrast ("Whereas")

Use در حالی که to point out a clear contrast between two facts:

Simultaneous Actions ("While")

You can also use در حالی که to connect two actions happening at the exact same time, which is helpful for giving multi-step instructions at the salon.
