Compound verbs

The Magic of Compound Verbs

In Persian, you will rarely learn entirely new verb stems for every action. Instead, the language heavily relies on compound verbs. You create these by pairing a noun or adjective with a "light verb" — a basic verb that does the heavy lifting for conjugation.

The most common light verb is کردن (to do / to make).

Conjugating with کردن

When you conjugate a compound verb, the first part (the noun or adjective) remains exactly the same. You only conjugate the light verb.

The present stem of کردن is کن. To form the present indicative, add the prefix می and the personal endings to کن.

Here is how you conjugate فکر کردن (to think):

PronounConjugated VerbMeaning
منفکر می‌کنمI think / am thinking
توفکر می‌کنیYou think / are thinking
اوفکر می‌کندHe/She thinks / is thinking
مافکر می‌کنیمWe think / are thinking
شمافکر می‌کنیدYou think / are thinking
آنهافکر می‌کنندThey think / are thinking

Essential Daily Actions

Because compound verbs are so common, many of your essential daily actions will use this exact pattern with کردن. Notice how the noun or adjective comes right before the conjugated light verb.
