Adverbs of state and manner (be tor-e, be surat-e)

Adverbs of Manner

In English, we often create adverbs of manner by adding "-ly" to an adjective. In Farsi, a highly productive way to form these adverbs is by placing an adjective after the phrases به طور or به صورت.

These phrases are linked to the adjective using the unseen Ezafe grammatical connector.

Using به طور

in a manner (used to form adverbs)
به طورbe tavor-e

When placed before an adjective, به طور describes the manner in which an action is performed. This structure is essential when discussing meticulous processes like vintage typewriter restoration.

Using به صورت

in a form (used to form adverbs)
به صورتbe surat-e

Similarly, به صورت literally translates to "in the form of." It functions just like به طور to create adverbs of manner, but is frequently preferred when describing physical, structural, or mechanical states.

Precision in Motion

Both به طور and به صورت are largely interchangeable in many contexts. They elegantly turn simple adjectives into precise adverbial phrases that modify verbs.
