Questions & Answers about Ik vind de vervaagde pixels niet mooi.
Why is vervaagde spelled with a double 'a', when the original verb vervagen only has one 'a'?
The spelling is based on the past participle, not the infinitive. The past participle of vervagen (to blur) is vervaagd. The 'a' must be doubled here to keep the long vowel sound in a closed syllable. When you add the -e to make it an adjective, the syllable break becomes ver-vaag-de. Because the 'a' is still in a closed syllable, it stays doubled.
In this lesson we saw vergroot become vergrote (dropping a vowel). Why doesn't vervaagd become vervagde?
It all comes down to syllable structure. In vergrote (ver-gro-te), there is only one consonant ('t') between the vowels, creating an open syllable where a single 'o' naturally sounds long. In vervaagde (ver-vaag-de), there are two consonants ('g' and 'd') between the vowels. This keeps the syllable closed, meaning you still need the double 'aa' to keep the vowel long.
Why doesn't the past participle vervaagd get a ge- prefix?
Verbs that already start with an unstressed prefix like ver-, be-, ge-, her-, ont-, or er- do not get an extra ge- in their past participle form.
Does niet mooi vinden strictly mean 'to not find beautiful'?
