Questions & Answers about Ligt het vlees in de vriezer?
How does the suffix -er work in the word vriezer?
It creates an instrument noun from a verb. The verb is vriezen (to freeze). Normally, the stem is vries, but when we add a suffix starting with a vowel like -er, the s voices back to a z. This gives us vriezer: the machine that does the freezing.
Why do we use ligt instead of is for the meat?
Dutch strongly prefers positional verbs (liggen, staan, zitten) to describe where something is located. Because a piece of meat doesn't have a defined flat bottom to stand upright on, we treat it as resting flat, so we use liggen (to lie).
Is there a rule that explains why vlees is a het word?
Yes! Vlees is an uncountable mass noun (a substance or material). In Dutch, generic materials and substances are very often neuter and take het (similar to het water, het zout, or het zand).
I've also heard the word diepvries. Can I use that instead of vriezer?
