Questions & Answers about Die analogieën, die evalueren we morgen.
Why does analogieën have an extra -e and a trema, while a word like poriën just adds an -n with a trema?
It depends on where the stress falls in the singular word. In analogie, the stress is on the final syllable (-gie). When a word ending in -ie has the stress on the final syllable, you add the full suffix -ën for the plural. If the stress is earlier in the word (like in porie), you only add an -n and put the trema on the existing e to make poriën.
Both analogieën and evalueren have vowels next to each other that belong to different syllables. Why doesn't evalueren get a trema?
A trema is only used to prevent misreading a vowel combination that usually forms a single Dutch sound (like ie, ee, oe, or ui). Because the letters ue in evalueren do not form a standard single-sound vowel combination in Dutch, there is no risk of misreading them as one sound, so no trema is needed.
Why is the word die repeated right after the comma?
This is a common conversational structure in Dutch called left dislocation. The speaker states the topic first (Die analogieën), pauses, and then uses a demonstrative pronoun (die) to refer back to it as the direct object of the sentence. It adds emphasis, much like saying "Those analogies, we'll evaluate them tomorrow" in English.
