Questions & Answers about We bestuderen de strategieën uit elke invalshoek.
Why is the plural of strategie written as strategieën with a trema?
Strategie ends in -ie and the stress falls on that final syllable (stra-te-GIE). Because of this stress, we form the plural by adding -ën. The trema (the two dots) is placed on the final e to show that a new syllable begins there, preventing you from pronouncing the vowels as one single sound. If the stress were earlier in the word (like porie), we would just add an -n and put the trema on the existing e (poriën).
Why do we use the preposition uit for 'from' here instead of van?
When talking about looking at or studying something from a certain angle or perspective, Dutch uses uit (literally 'out of'). The phrase uit een invalshoek is a fixed combination. You will also see this with just hoek: iets uit een andere hoek bekijken (to look at something from a different angle).
What is the literal meaning of invalshoek?
It is a compound noun made of inval (incidence or falling in), a linking -s-, and hoek (angle or corner). Its literal scientific meaning is 'angle of incidence', but in everyday Dutch it is the standard word for a 'perspective', 'approach', or 'angle' on a topic.
Just a quick refresher: why does elke have an -e at the end here?
Because invalshoek is a de-word (all words ending in hoek take de). The word elk (each or every) must get an -e ending when placed directly before a de-word. If you were using a het-word, there would be no -e (for example, elk probleem).
