Questions & Answers about Pas als de piloot gaat landen, is het verplicht om je handbagage op te ruimen.
Why does the main clause start with "is het" instead of "het is"?
Because the entire condition pas als de piloot gaat landen has been placed at the very beginning of the sentence. In Dutch, when you put a subordinate clause in the first position, it acts like a single block, triggering inversion in the main clause. Therefore, the verb is must be in the second position, directly following the condition.
Could I use "alleen wanneer" here instead of "pas als"?
Grammatically yes, but the nuance shifts slightly. Pas als (not until / only when) emphasizes a point in time or a sequence of events: you do not have to do it until the pilot starts landing. Alleen wanneer (only if) expresses a strict condition regardless of time. In the context of a flight sequence, the time-based pas als sounds most natural.
Why are the verbs "gaat landen" at the very end of the first clause?
The clause starting with pas als is a subordinate clause. In Dutch subordinate clauses, all verbs are pushed to the end. Since there are two verbs here (the auxiliary gaat and the infinitive landen), they cluster together at the end of that specific clause, right before the comma.
Why do we need "om" before "je handbagage op te ruimen"?
