Questions & Answers about De minister kan de grondwet evenwel niet veranderen.
Is evenwel just another word for echter?
Yes, evenwel is a concessive adverb that means "however" or "nevertheless," much like echter or niettemin. It belongs to a rather formal register and is mostly used in written Dutch, journalism, or formal contexts (like discussing politicians and laws). In everyday spoken Dutch, people usually just use maar (but).
Can I put evenwel at the very beginning of the sentence?
Yes, you can, but remember that it will change the word order. Since evenwel is an adverb, placing it at the start triggers inversion (verb before subject). The sentence would become: Evenwel kan de minister de grondwet niet veranderen.
Why is evenwel placed after de grondwet rather than right after the verb?
In Dutch, a specific, definite direct object (like de grondwet) usually comes before adverbs of time, manner, place, and logical connectors like evenwel. If the object were indefinite, it would come after the adverb.
Why does evenwel come before niet?
The adverb evenwel provides context for the entire statement that follows it. By placing it before niet, you establish the contrast ("however...") before applying the negation to the action of changing the constitution.
