Questions & Answers about Als je perfect wilt citeren, moet je duidelijk naar de auteur verwijzen.
How could I rewrite this sentence to use geacht worden te (to be expected to) instead of moeten?
You would replace moet je with the passive construction from this lesson. The main clause becomes: ...word je geacht duidelijk naar de auteur te verwijzen. This raises the formality, changing 'you must' to 'you are expected to'. Notice that te verwijzen goes to the very end of the sentence.
Why is the word order in the second half moet je and not je moet?
This is a classic case of inversion caused by the verb-second (V2) rule. The entire subordinate clause (Als je perfect wilt citeren) occupies the first position in the main sentence. Therefore, the main verb (moet) must immediately follow it in the second position, pushing the subject (je) to the third position.
Could I say Als je perfect wil citeren instead of using wilt?
Yes, both je wil and je wilt are correct in Dutch. Using wilt is a bit more standard in formal writing, whereas wil is extremely common in spoken Dutch and informal contexts.
Why does the adverb duidelijk come before naar de auteur?
