Questions & Answers about Kijk erin!
Why do we use erin instead of saying in het for "in it"?
In Dutch, you usually cannot put a preposition directly before the word het (it). Instead, they combine, and the order flips. The word het changes to er, and the preposition attaches to the end of it. That is why "in it" becomes erin.
Why is erin written as one single word here?
When er and a preposition are right next to each other, they fuse into one word. In longer sentences, you might see other words step between them, splitting them up (like Kijk er even in!). But since this sentence is so short, they stay glued together as erin.
Why is there no subject like jij (you) in this sentence?
This sentence is a command (an imperative). Just like in English, you don't need to say "you" when giving a direct order. To form the command in Dutch, you just use the shortest form (the stem) of the verb kijken, which is kijk.
