Questions & Answers about Waar is de klasgenoot van wie de uitnodiging kwijt is?
How do we express 'whose' in this sentence, and what is the literal translation?
We use the phrase van wie to mean 'whose' when talking about people. Literally, it translates to 'of whom'. By using this, you are essentially saying 'the classmate of whom the invitation is lost'.
Why does the verb is go to the very end of the sentence?
The phrase van wie starts a relative clause, which is a type of subclause that adds extra information to the noun before it. In Dutch subclauses, all verbs are pushed to the end. That is why the sentence ends with kwijt is instead of keeping the verb right after the invitation.
Is there a single word for 'whose' in Dutch instead of using the two words van wie?
Yes, you might sometimes see wiens for males or wier for females and plurals, mostly in written Dutch. However, in spoken and everyday Dutch, using van wie for all people is much more common and will always sound natural.
Could I use verloren here instead of kwijt?
You could say verloren is, but kwijt is the most natural choice here. Kwijt acts as an adjective meaning 'lost' or 'missing', and is perfectly suited for everyday items you cannot find. Verloren comes from the verb verliezen (to lose) and can sound a bit more formal or imply the item is permanently gone.
