Learn Dutch: De wijsheid komt met de jaren. - Wisdom comes with the years.

You can tell by the suffix -heid. In Dutch, any noun ending in -heid (which is similar to the English suffix '-ness' or '-hood') is always a de word. Here, it is added to the adjective wijs (wise) to form the noun wijsheid (wisdom).

Why does the sentence use De wijsheid instead of just Wijsheid like the English translation?

In Dutch, abstract concepts like wisdom, love, or nature often take a definite article (de or het) when you are making a broad, general statement about them. English drops the article here, but Dutch prefers to keep it.

The word jaar is a het word. Why does it say de jaren?

While it is indeed het jaar in the singular, remember that the definite article for all plural nouns in Dutch is always de. Therefore, het jaar becomes de jaren.

Is komt met de jaren a standard expression?

Yes, wijsheid komt met de jaren is a common proverb. It is the direct equivalent of the English phrase 'wisdom comes with age', even though the Dutch literally translates to 'with the years'.
