Questions & Answers about Als je het dieet volgt, verbrand je veel vet.
Why is the verb volgt at the end of the first part?
The word als (if) is a subordinating conjunction. Just like zodat (so that) from this lesson, it introduces a subclause and pushes the conjugated verb to the very end: Als je het dieet volgt.
Why does the second part say verbrand je instead of je verbrandt?
In Dutch, the verb must be the second idea in the main sentence. Here, the entire first clause (Als je het dieet volgt) counts as block number one. To keep the verb in the second position, the main clause has to start with the verb: verbrand je.
Why doesn't verbrand have a 't' at the end here?
Normally, the je (you) form gets a -t added to the verb stem. However, there is a special rule: when je comes directly after the verb as the subject, you drop the -t. That is why it is verbrand je and not verbrandt je.
Why do we use veel here instead of vele?
You use veel (much / a lot of) for uncountable nouns like vet (fat). You would only use vele (many) for countable plural nouns.
