Questions & Answers about Wat voor een huisdier willen jullie adopteren?
Why do we use wat voor een instead of welk here?
We use wat voor een because we are asking about the kind or category of pet (like a dog, cat, or bird). If we used welk huisdier, it would mean "which pet" as in picking a specific animal from a limited group already in front of you at the shelter.
Does wat voor een change if we ask about plural pets (huisdieren)?
Yes, you have to drop the een. Because een literally means "a" or "an", it only goes with singular nouns. For plural pets, you would just say Wat voor huisdieren...
Why is adopteren placed at the very end of the sentence?
This sentence has two verbs: willen (to want) and adopteren (to adopt). In Dutch questions, the working verb (willen) comes right after the question phrase, and the full infinitive verb (adopteren) gets pushed all the way to the end of the sentence.
How do we know to use jullie instead of jij for "you"?
The English translation says "you guys", which tells us the speaker is talking to more than one person. In Dutch, jullie is the plural form of "you", used when addressing a group, like a family or a couple.
