Questions & Answers about De avond is in de winter erg gezellig.
Does Dutch always use "in" for seasons, like in "in de winter"?
Yes, just like in English, Dutch uses the preposition in for seasons and months. You will say in de lente (in spring), in de zomer (in summer), in de herfst (in autumn), and in de winter (in winter). Notice that Dutch always includes the article de with the seasons here!
Why does in de winter come before erg gezellig?
In Dutch, expressions of time like in de winter generally come as early as possible in the middle of the sentence, right after the main verb. Putting the time before the description sounds much more natural to a Dutch speaker than leaving it for the end of the sentence like we often do in English.
Doesn't erg mean "terrible"? Why is it used with a nice word like gezellig?
Erg can mean "terrible" when describing a noun, like a terrible storm. But when it is used right before another adjective, it just means "very." So erg gezellig simply means "very cozy." You could also use heel gezellig here to mean the exact same thing.
Is gezellig exactly the same as "cozy"?
"Cozy" is the most common English translation, but gezellig means a bit more. It is a famous Dutch word that describes a warm, friendly, and sociable atmosphere. A room, a shared evening, or even a person can be gezellig.
