Questions & Answers about Ik heb nul euro.
Why does the sentence use euro instead of the plural euro's?
In Dutch, currencies and units of measurement stay in the singular form when they come directly after a number. So, just like you would say twintig euro (twenty euros) or honderd euro (a hundred euros), you also say nul euro (zero euros).
Can I say Ik heb geen euro's instead?
Yes! Ik heb geen euro's means "I have no euros" and is usually the more natural way to say this in everyday conversation. Using nul euro (zero euros) is perfectly correct but sounds a bit more mathematical or emphatic. Notice that when we use the word geen (no / not any) instead of a number, we do use the plural form euro's.
How do you pronounce the u in nul?
The Dutch u sounds very different from the English "u" in "null" or "dull". To make the Dutch u sound, say the English "ee" sound but tightly round your lips. It is a short, clipped vowel.
