Why can't I just say Ben je dromen over de vakantie?
Dutch doesn't translate 'are dreaming' word-for-word. To show that an action is happening right now, you must use the verb zijn (here conjugated as ben) plus the fixed phrase aan het, followed by the full action verb (dromen). You cannot leave out aan het.
Why is aan het dromen at the very end of the sentence?
In the zijn aan het structure, the aan het and the main verb normally go at the very end of the sentence. Other details, like what you are dreaming about (over de vakantie), get sandwiched between the first verb (ben) and the action (aan het dromen).
Why does the sentence say Ben je instead of Bent je?
To make a yes/no question, you swap the subject (je) and the verb. Remember that when je or jij comes immediately after the verb, the verb drops its normal -t ending. So Je bent becomes Ben je.
Does over always translate to 'about'?
Not always, but it is the correct preposition to use with dromen. Just like in English, verbs team up with specific prepositions. In Dutch, you use dromen over to mean 'to dream about' something.
