Questions & Answers about Vraag waar en vertel het antwoord.
Where is the subject (like 'you') in this sentence?
Because this sentence is giving commands (the imperative mood), the subject is left out. Just like in English, you start directly with the verbs: Vraag (Ask) and vertel (tell).
Why does the verb vragen (to ask) get a double 'a' in the command Vraag?
To keep the same long vowel sound! In vragen, the first syllable ends in an open 'a', so it sounds long. When we cut off the -en to make the command, the syllable now ends in a consonant ('g'). We must double the 'a' to keep that vowel sound long.
Why does vertellen (to tell) lose an 'l' in the command vertel?
Dutch words almost never end in a double consonant. When we take the full verb vertellen and remove the -en ending to find the command form, we are technically left with vertell. We drop the extra 'l' to get vertel.
Why do we use het for antwoord instead of de?
In Dutch, every noun is either a de word or a het word. Antwoord is a neuter noun, so it takes het. This is something you simply have to memorize when you learn new words!
