Questions & Answers about Ik doe vandaag de boodschappen.
Why is the verb doe and not doen?
doe is the "I" form of the irregular verb doen (to do). For most regular Dutch verbs, you just take off the -en from the full verb to get the "I" form, but doen is irregular and becomes doe.
The translation says "I am doing", but where is the "am" in the Dutch sentence?
Dutch doesn't use a separate word for "am" in this way. The present tense ik doe translates to both "I do" and "I am doing" in English. You only need the one verb!
Why does vandaag (today) come before de boodschappen (the groceries)?
In Dutch, words that tell you when something happens (like vandaag) usually come right after the verb and before the object. English often puts "today" at the very end of the sentence, but Dutch prefers time words earlier in the sentence.
Is boodschappen doen a standard phrase?
Yes! Just like "doing the groceries" or "grocery shopping" in English, Dutch uses the verb doen with the noun boodschappen to describe this chore. A single errand or grocery item is a boodschap, but the plural is used for the general activity.
