Questions & Answers about Ons huis is niet groot.
Why is it ons huis and not onze huis?
In Dutch, 'our' translates to either ons or onze. You use ons for singular het-words. Because the word for house is het huis, we use ons. For de-words and all plurals, you would use onze (for example, onze hond for 'our dog').
Why does niet come right after the verb is?
In a standard Dutch sentence, the verb is the second piece of information. The word niet (not) usually comes after the verb. It does not go before the verb like it sometimes can in English.
Why doesn't groot get an -e at the end here?
Adjectives only get an extra -e when they are placed directly in front of a noun (like in een grote tuin, meaning 'a big garden'). When the adjective is used later in the sentence after a verb like is to describe the subject, it stays in its basic dictionary form: groot.
