Questions & Answers about U mag de auto daar niet parkeren.
Why is niet placed near the end of the sentence?
In Dutch, niet (not) usually comes after a specific object like de auto (the car) and after words describing a place like daar (there). It also has to go before the main verb at the end of the sentence (parkeren). So, the negation gets pushed almost all the way to the end!
Why is parkeren (to park) at the very end of the sentence?
This sentence uses the verb mag (may). When you use a helper verb like this, it takes the normal verb spot (second place in the sentence), and the main action verb (parkeren) gets pushed to the very end in its full dictionary form.
We learned jij and je for 'you'. Why use u here?
Since u is used, shouldn't the verb be magt?
Normally, verbs with u get a -t at the end. However, mogen (to be allowed to / may) is an irregular verb. Its singular forms do not get a -t. It is simply ik mag, jij mag, u mag, and hij/zij/het mag.
