Questions & Answers about Ik ben vandaag een beetje verdrietig.
What does een beetje mean and how is it used here?
Een beetje means "a bit" or "a little". It is a degree modifier that goes right before the adjective verdrietig (sad) to tell us exactly how sad you are feeling.
Why doesn't verdrietig have an -e at the end?
Because it is not standing directly in front of a noun. When an adjective comes later in the sentence to describe the subject (after a verb like ben), it is called a predicative adjective. In Dutch, predicative adjectives never get an extra -e.
Why is vandaag in the middle of the sentence instead of at the end?
In Dutch, expressions of time like vandaag (today) usually come very early in the sentence, right after the main verb. While English puts "today" at the end, Dutch prefers the order "I am today a bit sad".
How do you pronounce the -ig ending in verdrietig?
When a Dutch word ends in -ig, the i changes to sound like a short, weak "uh" (like the 'a' in "about") and the g makes the typical Dutch 'g' sound. It does not sound like the English word "pig".
