Questions & Answers about We hebben thuis geen snoepjes.
How is the word snoepjes formed?
The base word is snoep (candy or sweets). Following the rule for basic diminutives, we add -je to make it a single, small piece of candy: snoepje. Finally, we add an -s to make it plural, giving us snoepjes (candies).
Why do we use thuis instead of huis?
Huis just means the physical building (a house). Thuis is a special adverb that means "at home." Whenever you are talking about being in your own home, you use thuis.
Why does this sentence use geen instead of niet?
You use geen to negate a noun, meaning "no," "not a," or "not any." Because we are saying we do not have any candies, geen is the correct word. You use niet when you want to negate the verb itself or an adjective.
Why is thuis placed before geen snoepjes?
In Dutch, details about time and place usually come before the direct object. Since thuis tells us the place (at home) and geen snoepjes is the object (the candies we don't have), thuis comes first.
