Why is it het meisje? Shouldn't a girl get a gendered article like de?
In Dutch, all words ending in -je (diminutives, or "little" words) are always het words. Because meisje originally meant "little maid", it takes het, even though it refers to a female person.
Why does the sentence use is for both the girl and the woman?
is is the singular form of the verb zijn (to be) for "he", "she", and "it". You use it when talking about one person or thing in the third person. Note that this is the exact same verb form you would use with the formal "you" (u is).
Why is ook placed after is instead of before it?
In Dutch main clauses, the verb must be the second piece of information in the sentence. de vrouw takes the first spot, so the verb is must come next. Adverbs like ook (also) naturally fall after the verb.
