Questions & Answers about Dobar dan, gospodine. Kako ste Vi danas?
Why do we use ste Vi instead of si ti here?
This sentence uses the formal way to say "you". When speaking respectfully to a stranger, an elder, or someone like gospodine (sir), you use the plural form of the verb (ste instead of si) and the pronoun Vi instead of ti.
Why is Vi capitalized in the middle of the sentence?
In Croatian, it is a rule of respect to capitalize Vi when you are formally addressing one person in writing. If you were talking to a group of people, you would just use a lowercase vi.
The dictionary says "mister" or "sir" is gospodin. Why does it change to gospodine here?
When you are directly talking to or calling out to someone, Croatian changes the ending of their name or title. This is called the vocative case. For masculine words ending in a consonant like gospodin, you usually add -e at the end.
Do I always have to say the word Vi, or can I just say Kako ste danas?
You can definitely leave it out! The verb ste already shows that you are using the formal "you". Saying Kako ste danas? is very natural and correct. Keeping the word Vi just adds a little extra emphasis or politeness.
