Questions & Answers about Ušli su u ured i evo iznenađenja!
Why is iznenađenja in the genitive case here?
It follows the presentational particle evo. In Croatian, when you use evo, eto, or eno to point something out (like saying "here is" or "there is"), the noun that follows must take the genitive case. The dictionary form is the neuter noun iznenađenje, so its genitive form is iznenađenja.
Could we use eto or eno instead of evo in this sentence?
Grammatically yes, but the meaning would shift. Evo points to something right here, close to the speaker or their current point of view in the story. Eto points to something closer to the listener, and eno points to something far from both. Since the narrator is excitedly presenting a surprise they are encountering right now, evo is the natural choice.
Is there a verb missing after evo? In English we say "here IS a surprise".
No verb is missing. The presentational particles evo, eto, and eno already carry the meaning of pointing something out ("here is", "there are", etc.). You do not need to add a form of the verb "to be" (biti) to make it a complete thought.
Why do we use u ured rather than u uredu?
This is a quick refresher on motion vs. location. The verb ući (to enter, seen here as ušli su) shows movement toward a destination. The preposition u takes the accusative case for motion (u ured = into the office), whereas it takes the locative case for a static location (u uredu = already inside the office).
