Presentational particles (evo, eto, eno)

Presentational Particles

When you want to point something out or draw attention to it—like saying "Here is..." or "There is..." in English—Croatian uses presentational particles.

The word you choose depends on where the object is located relative to the speaker and the listener. Crucially, the noun that follows these particles must always be in the Genitive case.

Evo: Near the Speaker

Use evo to draw attention to something near you, the speaker. It roughly translates to "Here is" or "Here are." Notice how the nouns in the examples below take their Genitive forms (for example, poštar becomes poštara).

Here is the postman!
Evo poštara!
Here is the permit we can work with.
Evo dozvole s kojom možemo raditi.

Eto: Near the Listener

Use eto to point out something near the person you are talking to. It translates to "There is" or "There are" (near you).

There is your order!
Eto tvoje narudžbe!
There is the order to save dinner!
Eto narudžbe za spas večere!

Eno: Far from Both

Use eno to point out something that is far away from both you and the listener. It translates to "There is" (over there in the distance).

There is the document on the cabinet!
Eno spisa na ormaru!
There is the postman in front of the house.
Eno poštara ispred kuće.

Figurative and Abstract Uses

These particles are not exclusively for pointing at physical objects in physical space. You will frequently see them used to present sudden events, realizations, or abstract concepts. This adds a sense of immediacy, surprise, or dramatic flair to the sentence.

They entered the office, and here is a surprise!
Ušli su u ured i evo iznenađenja!
They exited the building, and there is salvation!
Izašli su iz zgrade i eto spasa!
If anyone were to ask me, here is the answer!
Kad bi me netko pitao, evo odgovora!
