Questions & Answers about Susjed je takav osobenjak da je sve tiši.
Why do we use "takav" here instead of "tako" to mean "such a"?
Because takav is an adjective, meaning it must modify a noun. Here, it describes the noun osobenjak (loner) and matches it in the masculine nominative case. If you wanted to say the neighbor is "so quiet that...", you would use the adverb tako before an adjective: tako tih da....
What is the background of the word "osobenjak"?
It comes from the root osoba (person) or osobno (personal). An osobenjak is an eccentric, an oddball, or a solitary person. It essentially describes someone who is distinctly "their own person" and keeps to themselves.
How does "sve tiši" translate to "getting quieter and quieter"?
In Croatian, placing sve (which usually means "all" or "everything") directly before a comparative adjective is the standard way to express "more and more" or "increasingly". Since tiši is the comparative form of tih (quiet), sve tiši means "quieter and quieter" or "increasingly quiet".
Why does the second clause just use the simple present tense "je" instead of a verb for "getting" or "becoming"?
Croatian doesn't need a separate verb like "postajati" (to become) here because the changing state is already fully expressed by the sve + comparative structure. Using the simple present tense je together with sve tiši is the most natural way to say "is getting quieter and quieter".
