Questions & Answers about Moramo završiti projekt do petnaestog ili šesnaestog kolovoza.
Why do petnaestog and šesnaestog end in -og?
In Croatian, dates use ordinal numbers (first, second, fifteenth) in the genitive case. The dictionary forms are petnaesti (fifteenth) and šesnaesti (sixteenth). Because ordinal numbers change their endings like adjectives, they take the masculine/neuter genitive ending -og. This is required here for two reasons: we are expressing a date, and the preposition do always forces the genitive case.
Why is the month written as kolovoza instead of kolovoz?
When expressing dates in Croatian, you are literally saying "the fifteenth of August". This means the month also needs to be in the genitive case. The dictionary form is kolovoz (August), and adding -a makes it kolovoza.
Does the preposition do mean "by" or "until" in this sentence?
It can mean both depending on the verb! When used with a completed action like završiti (to finish), it sets a deadline and means "by" or "no later than". If the verb described an ongoing action, like "we are working", do would translate as "until".
Projekt is the object of the sentence. Why didn't its ending change?
It actually is in the accusative case, but you can't tell just by looking at it! Projekt is a masculine noun. In Croatian, masculine nouns that represent non-living things (inanimate objects) have an accusative form that is completely identical to their nominative (dictionary) form.
