The Preposition "oko" for Surroundings
The preposition oko translates to "around" when describing physical location or space. It always requires the noun that follows it to take the genitive case.
Notice how the masculine nouns stol (table) and špil (deck) take the genitive ending -a, while the feminine noun ploča (board) takes the ending -e.
| We will gather around the table. | Okupit ćemo se oko stola. |
| As soon as you arrive, we will gather around the board. | Čim dođeš, okupit ćemo se oko ploče. |
| I put the tokens around the deck. | Stavio sam žetone oko špila. |
Approximating Quantities
Beyond physical space, oko is also used to mean "about" or "approximately" when discussing numbers, amounts, or time.
| There are about fifty tokens on the table. | Na stolu je oko pedeset žetona. |
| We have about an hour for this tense game. | Imamo oko sat vremena za ovu napetu igru. |
Game Mechanics: Pieces and Turns
During the game, the physical piece you move is called a figura, and a player's move or turn is their potez. Use the verb pomaknuti to describe shifting a piece across the board.
| Every player must move their piece. | Svaki igrač mora pomaknuti svoju figuru. |
| Do not move the piece before my turn! | Nemoj pomaknuti figuru prije mog poteza! |
