Visiting the ATM
When you need cash, the first step is to find an ATM (bankomat). Just like in English, words related to handling money use specific financial vocabulary, such as transakcija (transaction).
Inserting Cards and Making Withdrawals
The verb ubaciti means to insert or put into. You can use the conjunction čim (as soon as) to sequence your actions at the machine.
To tell someone not to do something, use the negative imperative word nemoj followed by the infinitive of the verb.
Banknotes and Amounts
When dealing with cash, you will handle banknotes (novčanica).
You will also frequently see the word iznos (amount). When requesting or confirming a withdrawal, you will often pair it with adjectives like najveći (largest/maximum) or točan (exact).
Checking Account Balances
When checking your bank account (račun), you will want to look for the available (raspoloživ) balance. To express that something is "on the account," use the preposition na followed by the locative case (na računu).
Currency Exchange
If you need to swap foreign currency (valuta), you will visit an exchange office (mjenjačnica). To state your location at the exchange office, use the preposition u (in/at) with the locative case (u mjenjačnici).
Overdrafts and Cancellations
An overdraft is simply referred to as a minus (minus). Pay attention to the case used with the preposition u here: to describe being currently in a state of overdraft, use the locative case (u minusu).
However, to describe entering that state (motion or change of state), use the accusative case (u minus).
Finally, if something goes wrong, you may need to use the verb poništiti to void or cancel your action.
