พา means more than simply causing another person to move. It construes the agent as taking an animate participant along, normally by accompanying, guiding, supervising, or otherwise being involved in the journey or following activity. That shared involvement distinguishes พา from causative ให้, where the causer can remain behind, and from เอา, which normally treats its object as a handled theme.
พา is (neutral) and extremely common in standard Central Thai. Formal prose may choose นำ, especially for official transport or guidance, but นำ has its own broader meanings and is not required for politeness.
Agent and companion move together
The basic pattern is agent + พา + companion + ไป/มา + destination or activity. The noun after พา is grammatically object-like, yet semantically it remains an animate participant in the motion or later action.
พรุ่งนี้ผมจะพาคุณยายไปคลินิกครับ
phrung ni phom cha pha khun yai pai khlinik khrap
Tomorrow I'll take Grandma to the clinic.
เธอพาเพื่อนมาเที่ยวเชียงใหม่ค่ะ
thoe pha phuean ma thiao chiang mai kha
She brought her friend to visit Chiang Mai.
The speaker in the first example normally goes with Grandma, at least through the relevant part of the trip. In the second, เธอ and เพื่อน arrive toward the relevant center together. ไป and มา retain their deictic perspectives: ไป leads away from the current center; มา leads toward it. They are not past or future auxiliaries.
พา versus ให้ and เอา
Compare the same family situation with a different participant relation:
แม่ให้ลูกไปหาทันตแพทย์คนเดียวค่ะ
mae hai luk pai ha thantaphaet khon diao kha
The mother lets or tells her child to go to the dentist alone.
แม่พาลูกไปหาทันตแพทย์ค่ะ
mae pha luk pai ha thantaphaet kha
The mother takes her child to the dentist.
In the ให้ sentence, ลูก is the actor of ไป and the explicit คนเดียว confirms that the mother does not accompany the child. In the พา sentence, both participants are involved in the trip, even though ลูก is introduced after พา.
เอา usually presents an object as a theme under the agent's control. Animate beings are possible with เอา in some lexical, colloquial, or coercive contexts, but neutral transportation of a person calls for พา.
ช่วยเอากระเป๋าไปไว้ในรถด้วยครับ
chuai ao krapao pai wai nai rot duai khrap
Please put the bag in the car too.
ช่วยพาคุณตาไปนั่งในรถด้วยค่ะ
chuai pha khun ta pai nang nai rot duai kha
Please help Grandpa into the car too.
The bag is handled and placed. Grandpa remains a socially and semantically active companion, even if he needs assistance. This is an affectedness contrast, not an animacy rule with no exceptions; speakers may personify objects or objectify people for special effects, and those effects should not be treated as the neutral baseline.
Productive serial patterns
พา can lead into motion, destination, and activity predicates. Thai does not mark the later verbs as English infinitives.
| Agent | พา + companion | Motion | Destination/activity | Participant relation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ผม | พาลูกค้า | ไป | ดูห้องตัวอย่าง | agent and client go; both join the viewing |
| พี่ | พาหลาน | มา | กินข้าวที่บ้าน | both come; the child eats |
| ไกด์ | พานักท่องเที่ยว | เดิน | ชมตลาด | guided shared activity |
| — | พาเขา | กลับ | ไปพัก | known agent accompanies him back |
ไกด์พานักท่องเที่ยวเดินชมย่านเก่าครับ
kai pha nak thongthiao doen chom yan kao khrap
The guide takes the tourists on a walking tour of the old quarter.
เย็นนี้พี่จะพาหลานมากินข้าวที่บ้านค่ะ
yen ni phi cha pha lan ma kin khao thi ban kha
This evening my older sibling will bring the child over to eat at home.
The later predicate does not always have exactly the same semantic subject. In พาหลานมากินข้าว, the older sibling shares the coming event, while หลาน is especially salient as the eater. Real serial-verb interpretation depends on plausible events and participant tracking, not a rule that every verb must have one mechanically identical subject.
พา can also occur without overt ไป or มา when the destination is unimportant or the following activity supplies the endpoint.
วันหยุดเขาพาเด็ก ๆ เที่ยวพิพิธภัณฑ์ครับ
wan yut khao pha dek dek thiao phiphitthaphan khrap
On the holiday he took the children around the museum.
The sentence still evokes accompanied activity. By contrast, an inanimate cause with no accompaniment requires a causative or lexical verb: เสียงดังทำให้เด็กตื่น, not เสียงดังพาเด็กตื่น.
For the deictic choice, review พา with ไป and มา and motion perspective.
Omission, negation, and result scope
Thai may omit the agent, companion, or destination when already active in the discourse. Omission is most natural when only one interpretation is available.
เดี๋ยวพาไปส่งหน้าสถานีค่ะ
diao pha pai song na sathani kha
I'll take you and drop you off in front of the station.
Both “I” and “you” are supplied by the situation. English requires them; Thai does not.
Negation can deny the accompanied event, express inability, or locate failure at the result:
เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้พาเด็กไปโรงเรียนครับ
muea chao phom mai dai pha dek pai rongrian khrap
I didn't take the child to school this morning.
รถคันนี้เล็กเกินไป พาทุกคนไปไม่ได้ค่ะ
rot khan ni lek koen pai pha thuk khon pai mai dai kha
This car is too small; we can't take everyone.
In the first, ไม่ได้ has broad event scope. In the second, ไม่ได้ follows the chain and expresses situational inability. A result such as พาไปไม่ถึง asserts an attempt but says the destination was not reached. Time still comes from expressions such as เมื่อเช้า and from context.
Literary and advertising language sometimes extends พา metaphorically, as in พาความสุขมาให้ “bring happiness.” Label that as (literary/advertising); it does not erase the ordinary accompanied-motion prototype.
An ordinary-polite dialogue
พรุ่งนี้คุณพาคุณแม่ไปโรงพยาบาลใช่ไหมคะ
phrung ni khun pha khun mae pai rongphayaban chai mai kha
You're taking your mother to the hospital tomorrow, right?
ใช่ครับ แต่ตอนเย็นพี่สาวจะพาท่านกลับบ้านครับ
chai khrap tae ton yen phi sao cha pha than klap ban khrap
Yes, but my older sister will take her home in the evening.
ถ้าต้องการ ฉันพาไปที่รถได้นะคะ
tha tongkan chan pha pai thi rot dai na kha
If needed, I can walk you to the car.
The polite conversation omits recoverable companions in the final turn. ท่าน is (formal/respectful); it suits respectful reference to the mother here but would be unnecessarily elevated for many peers.
Common Mistakes
1. Using ให้ when accompaniment is essential
❌ ฉันให้คุณยายไปธนาคารค่ะ
Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘I am taking Grandma to the bank’; this says I let or make her go.
✅ ฉันพาคุณยายไปธนาคารค่ะ
chan pha khun yai pai thanakhan kha
I'm taking Grandma to the bank.
2. Treating a person like a handled object
❌ ผมเอาลูกค้าไปดูห้องครับ
Incorrect for the intended ordinary meaning ‘I'll accompany the client to view the room’; เอา construes the client as a handled theme here.
✅ ผมพาลูกค้าไปดูห้องครับ
phom pha luk kha pai du hong khrap
I'll take the client to see the room.
3. Using พา for an inanimate causal stimulus
❌ กลิ่นควันพาฉันปวดหัวค่ะ
Unnatural for the ordinary meaning ‘The smell of smoke gives me a headache.’
✅ กลิ่นควันทำให้ฉันปวดหัวค่ะ
klin khwan tham hai chan puat hua kha
The smell of smoke gives me a headache.
4. Placing English-style negation before the result chain
❌ ผมพาเขาไม่ไปสถานีครับ
Incorrect for the intended event denial ‘I didn't take him to the station’; this instead invites a negative embedded-action reading.
✅ ผมไม่ได้พาเขาไปสถานีครับ
phom mai dai pha khao pai sathani khrap
I didn't take him to the station.
Key Takeaways
- พา introduces an animate companion whom the agent accompanies, guides, or supervises.
- Use ให้ when the causer need not join the caused action, and เอา for a handled theme in the neutral baseline.
- ไป, มา, and later activity verbs create a serial chain whose participants are inferred from event plausibility and order.
- Negation position distinguishes event denial, inability, and failure to reach a result; พา itself carries no tense inflection.
