ขอให้ for Wishes and Desired Outcomes

ขอให้ + clause presents a situation as something the speaker requests, hopes for, or ceremonially wishes into being. The person after ให้ is normally the understood actor or experiencer of the desired outcome—not a recipient receiving an object. This participant structure explains why ขอให้ can introduce both practical instructions and good wishes.

The construction is (neutral) in personal wishes and ranges from (neutral–formal) in requests and announcements. It is not a conjugated mood and does not change form for person or time. Its force comes from the speaker's stance, the following clause, and the social setting.

A desired clause after ขอให้

The productive frame is (speaker) + ขอให้ + actor/experiencer + predicate. The speaker is often omitted because the utterance itself identifies the source of the wish or request.

ขอให้คุณพ่อหายเร็ว ๆ นะคะ

kho hai khun pho hai reo reo na kha

I hope your father gets well soon.

ขอให้ทุกคนส่งรายงานภายในวันศุกร์ครับ

kho hai thuk khon song rai ngan phai nai wan suk khrap

Please have everyone submit the report by Friday.

In the first sentence, คุณพ่อ experiences the hoped-for recovery. In the second, ทุกคน is responsible for the requested submission. Neither participant is simply an indirect object of ขอ. Thai packages the desired proposition as a clause after ให้.

SourceFrameActor/experiencerDesired predicateTypical force
ขอให้คุณพ่อหายเร็ว personal good wish
ผมขอให้ทีมตรวจตัวเลขอีกครั้งexplicit request
บริษัทขอให้ลูกค้าเก็บใบเสร็จไว้formal notice
ขอให้เดินทางโดยสวัสดิภาพformulaic wish

ผมขอให้ทีมตรวจยอดขายอีกครั้งครับ

phom kho hai thim truat yot khai ik khrang khrap

I ask the team to check the sales figures again.

Making ผม explicit emphasizes who is issuing the request. In an institutional notice, an organization may occupy the same source slot. In a personal blessing, an explicit first-person source is usually unnecessary and can sound ceremonious.

💡
After ขอให้, ask “Who performs or experiences the desired outcome?” That participant belongs before the embedded predicate: ขอให้ + เขา + กลับมา. Do not analyze เขา as the person to whom an object is given.

Request, hope, or conventional wish?

ขอให้ does not determine one speech act by itself. An achievable action controlled by the addressee invites a request reading. A state outside anyone's direct control invites a hope or blessing reading. Ceremonial phrases draw on the same desired-outcome structure.

ขอให้ผู้โดยสารเตรียมบัตรประชาชนให้พร้อมค่ะ

kho hai phu doisan triam bat prachachon hai phrom kha

Passengers are requested to have their ID cards ready.

This is (formal) public-service language even though it ends politely. In everyday conversation, a small favor often sounds lighter with ช่วย...หน่อย or a question with ได้ไหม.

ช่วยปิดหน้าต่างให้หน่อยได้ไหมคะ

chuai pit natang hai noi dai mai kha

Could you please close the window?

ขอให้การสัมภาษณ์พรุ่งนี้ผ่านไปด้วยดีนะครับ

kho hai kan samphat phrung ni phan pai duai di na khrap

I hope tomorrow's interview goes well.

The second cannot sensibly command the interview to go well, so it is heard as a wish. The event type and discourse select the interpretation.

Compare อยากให้, which reports a person's desire and can sound more personal, with ขอให้, which performs or formally voices the request or wish.

ฉันอยากให้คุณพักผ่อนมากกว่านี้ค่ะ

chan yak hai khun phak phon mak kwa ni kha

I want you to get more rest.

ขอให้คุณพักผ่อนให้เต็มที่นะคะ

kho hai khun phak phon hai tem thi na kha

I hope you get plenty of rest.

The first states the speaker's personal desire. The second is a supportive wish directed toward the listener. Intonation and relationship still matter: a request phrased with ขอให้ can sound authoritative if the speaker has institutional power.

ขอ, ขอให้, and the changing participant structure

With ขอ + verb, the omitted or explicit requester normally asks permission to perform that verb. With ขอให้ + person + verb, the person after ให้ performs the desired action.

ผมขอกลับก่อนนะครับ

phom kho klap kon na khrap

May I leave early?

ผมขอให้คุณกลับมาก่อนเที่ยงครับ

phom kho hai khun klap ma kon thiang khrap

I ask you to come back before noon.

English uses different patterns—may I, ask you to, hope that—and marks some distinctions with auxiliaries or infinitives. Thai uses ขอ versus ขอให้, participant order, and context. The verb after ขอให้ is not an inflected subjunctive, and no Thai equivalent of English to is required.

For a wider comparison, see request frames and ขอ as a request marker.

Negation and aspect inside the desired outcome

Negation after the embedded participant makes the desired outcome negative. This is appropriate for a direct instruction not to do something.

ขอให้ทุกคนไม่เปิดเผยข้อมูลนี้นะครับ

kho hai thuk khon mai poet phoei khomun ni na khrap

I ask everyone not to disclose this information.

In (formal) notices, Thai may instead use ห้าม for a prohibition or ขอความกรุณาอย่า... for an explicitly courteous negative request. The choice changes interpersonal force, not tense.

Aspect markers belong inside the desired clause when their meanings are relevant. They do not attach to ขอให้ as conjugational endings.

ขอให้คุณเตรียมเอกสารไว้ก่อนประชุมนะคะ

kho hai khun triam ekkasan wai kon prachum na kha

Please have the documents prepared before the meeting.

Here ไว้ presents the documents as being kept ready. A sentence-final แล้ว could mark an achieved or newly relevant state, but a request for an unachieved future action generally uses a deadline or context instead of mechanically inserting แล้ว. Thai does not need a future auxiliary simply because English uses will in a hoped-for outcome.

An ordinary-polite dialogue

พรุ่งนี้ขอให้คุณมาถึงก่อนเก้าโมงนะคะ

phrung ni kho hai khun ma thueng kon kao mong na kha

Please arrive before nine tomorrow.

ได้ครับ ผมจะออกจากบ้านให้เร็วขึ้นครับ

dai khrap phom cha ok chak ban hai reo khuen khrap

Certainly. I'll leave home earlier.

ขอบคุณค่ะ ขอให้เดินทางราบรื่นนะคะ

khop khun kha kho hai doen thang rapruen na kha

Thank you. I hope your journey goes smoothly.

The first ขอให้ is a negotiable request because the addressee controls arrival time. The final ขอให้ is a good wish. Politeness particles frame the full utterance; they do not identify the participant roles inside the desired clause.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting ให้ before a different actor

❌ ผมขอคุณส่งไฟล์วันนี้ครับ

Unnatural ordinary Thai for ‘I ask you to send the file today’; the desired-clause frame is missing ให้.

✅ ผมขอให้คุณส่งไฟล์วันนี้ครับ

phom kho hai khun song fai wan ni khrap

I ask you to send the file today.

2. Using ขอให้ when the requester wants permission for their own action

❌ ผมขอให้กลับก่อนครับ

Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘May I leave early?’; ขอให้ invites a following desired clause and leaves its actor unclear.

✅ ผมขอกลับก่อนครับ

phom kho klap kon khrap

May I leave early?

3. Copying English negative-auxiliary order

❌ ขอไม่ทุกคนเปิดโทรศัพท์ค่ะ

Incorrect word order for asking everyone not to turn on their phones.

✅ ขอให้ทุกคนไม่เปิดโทรศัพท์ค่ะ

kho hai thuk khon mai poet thorasap kha

Everyone is requested not to turn on their phones.

4. Treating ขอให้ as a future-tense marker

❌ พรุ่งนี้ฝนขอให้ตกครับ

Incorrect as a neutral prediction ‘It will rain tomorrow’; ขอให้ turns the rain into a desired outcome.

✅ พรุ่งนี้ฝนน่าจะตกครับ

phrung ni fon na cha tok khrap

It will probably rain tomorrow.

💡
ขอให้ expresses the speaker's desired orientation toward the following clause. It is therefore appropriate only when the speaker can genuinely request or wish for that outcome—not as a generic translation of English will, may, or that.

Key Takeaways

  • Use ขอให้ + actor/experiencer + predicate for a requested or wished-for outcome.
  • Infer request versus hope from control, event type, relationship, and setting.
  • Contrast ขอ + verb for the requester's own proposed action with ขอให้ when a following participant carries out or experiences the outcome.
  • Negation and aspect sit inside the desired clause according to their scope; ขอให้ itself does not conjugate.
