umirati / umreti (to die)

Умирати / умрети is the basic aspect pair for “die.” Умирати opens the event as a process, repeated occurrence, or general tendency; умрети presents the boundary after which someone or something is no longer alive. The perfective infinitive is irregular enough that it must be learned with умрем, умро/умрла, and умри, not by mechanically removing an ending.

Principal Forms

Formумирати (imperfective)умрети (perfective)
presentумирем, умиреш, умире, умиремо, умирете, умируумрем, умреш, умре, умремо, умрете, умру
l-participle (m./f./n. sg.; m./f./n. pl.)умирао, умирала, умирало; умирали, умирале, умиралаумро, умрла, умрло; умрли, умрле, умрла
imperativeумири, умиримо, умиритеумри, умримо, умрите
Future I, 1st singularумираћуумрећу

The perfective paradigm contracts: умрети → умрем → умро, never умрео. Its third-person plural is умру, not a guessed form in -еју. Imperatives are grammatically regular within this paradigm, but a literal command such as Умри! is extremely hostile. Forms of this imperative occur mainly in insults, fiction, games, and rhetoric; they are not neutral everyday requests.

💡
Memorize four anchors together: умрети — умрем — умро/умрла — умри. They reveal the stems that the infinitive alone conceals.

Process, Repetition, and Boundary

Use imperfective умирати for an unfolding decline, recurring deaths, or a general biological fact. Use perfective умрети when the event reaches its terminal boundary.

Стара липа полако умире јер јој је корење оштећено.

The old linden tree is slowly dying because its roots are damaged.

Током сушних лета младе саднице умиру ако их редовно не заливамо.

During dry summers, young seedlings die if we do not water them regularly.

Деда је умро у сну после кратке болести.

Grandfather died in his sleep after a short illness.

The contrast is viewpoint, not duration. A death can follow a long illness and still be perfective умро је, because the speaker identifies the completed transition. Conversely, умирао је месецима views the prolonged process without claiming that each moment completed it.

Месецима је умирао од тешке болести, али је до краја разговарао са породицом.

He was dying from a serious illness for months, but he kept talking with his family until the end.

Perfective present forms normally refer to a future or hypothetical boundary, especially after ако, кад, чим. They do not form a true ongoing present.

Ако ова биљка умре, посадићемо отпорнију сорту на истом месту.

If this plant dies, we’ll plant a hardier variety in the same spot.

Cause, Circumstance, and Age

The ordinary cause frame is умрети од + genitive: од рака, од последица повреде, од глади. The same government works with умирати. Formal notices may use услед + genitive “as a result of,” but it sounds administrative rather than conversational.

Његов прадеда је умро од упале плућа пре него што су антибиотици постали доступни.

His great-grandfather died of pneumonia before antibiotics became available.

Животиње су у том крају умирале од глади током оштре зиме.

Animals in that area were dying of hunger during the harsh winter.

Circumstances take their normal prepositional frames: у сну “in one’s sleep,” у болници “in hospital,” после операције “after surgery.” Age is commonly expressed as у осамдесетој години or са осамдесет година.

Песникиња је умрла у осамдесет другој години, у свом дому у Београду.

The poet died at the age of eighty-one, in her home in Belgrade.

The ordinal expression counts the year of life currently being lived, so у осамдесет другој години means age eighty-one. If exact age matters more than this convention, са осамдесет једном годином is unambiguous.

Not Every Death Is умрети

Serbian selects other verbs when manner or register matters:

VerbMeaning and register
преминутиdie, pass away; respectful, especially (formal/journalistic)
погинутиbe killed in an accident, war, disaster, or other violent event
скончатиdie; (literary) or elevated

Професорка је преминула после дуге болести, саопштио је факултет.

The professor passed away after a long illness, the university announced. (formal/journalistic)

Возач је погинуо у несрећи, а двоје путника је повређено.

The driver was killed in the accident, and two passengers were injured.

English die can cover both examples, but Serbian погинути encodes a violent external event. The respectful announcement normally uses perfective преминути; for an unfolding process, ordinary Serbian still uses imperfective умирати rather than trying to build a frequent conversational pair from преминути.

Figurative Everyday Uses

In (informal) speech, умирати од + genitive is a productive exaggeration for an intense feeling or bodily need. Context makes clear that no literal death is intended.

Умирем од глади — хајде да наручимо нешто док кухиња још ради.

I’m starving—let’s order something while the kitchen is still open. (informal)

Сви смо умирали од смеха кад је испричао шта му се десило у аутобусу.

We were all dying laughing when he told us what happened to him on the bus. (informal)

Because these are durative states, imperfective умирати is the default. Perfective умрети од смеха can appear as deliberate hyperbole about a possible endpoint, but it is not a neutral literal prediction.

Ekavian and Ijekavian

This guide uses Ekavian умрети. Standard Ijekavian Serbian has умријети, but the high-value finite and participial forms remain умрем, умру, умро, умрла. Do not insert ије mechanically into every form.

Ако не буде воде, цвијеће ће умријети до краја недјеље.

If there is no water, the flowers will die by the end of the week. (Ijekavian Serbian)

That whole example is consistently Ijekavian. See Ekavian and Ijekavian for the broader system.

Clitics and the Perfect

The verb is not reflexive: do not add се. In the perfect, the auxiliary precedes the agreeing l-participle in its normal second-position position: он је умро, она је умрла, они су умрли. A dative clitic may identify the person affected.

Баки је прошлог месеца угинуо пас с којим је живела петнаест година.

Last month, Grandma’s dog, which had lived with her for fifteen years, died.

For animals, угинути is the ordinary neutral verb; using умрети can humanize a pet and is also heard, but угинути remains the unmarked zoological choice.

Micro-dialogue

„Од чега је умро твој стриц?“ — „Од последица можданог удара. Дуго се опорављао, али је изненада преминуо прошлог пролећа.“ — „Жао ми је, нисам знао.“

‘What did your uncle die of?’ — ‘From the effects of a stroke. He had been recovering for a long time, but he passed away suddenly last spring.’ — ‘I’m sorry; I didn’t know.’

The first question uses neutral умрети од + genitive. The answer shifts to respectful преминути, a register choice rather than a new literal outcome.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose the viewpoint

Complete four sentences with a form of умирати or умрети: an old tree declining now, plants that repeatedly die in winter, one historical death, and a future possibility after ако. Explain the boundary in each perfective choice.

Task 2: Build the whole frame

Give the third-person plural present, masculine and feminine l-participles, and first-person singular Future I of умрети. Then write one sentence with од + genitive and one respectful announcement with преминути.

Common Mistakes

❌ Њен отац је умрео пре много година.

Incorrect — the perfective l-participle contracts to умро, not умрео.

✅ Њен отац је умро пре много година, док је она још била дете.

Her father died many years ago, while she was still a child.

❌ Бака се умрла у сну.

Incorrect — умрети is not reflexive; remove се.

✅ Бака је умрла у сну, мирно и без болова.

Grandmother died in her sleep, peacefully and without pain.

❌ Ове саднице умру полако јер немају довољно светлости.

Incorrect for an unfolding present — use imperfective умиру.

✅ Ове саднице полако умиру јер немају довољно светлости.

These seedlings are slowly dying because they do not get enough light.

❌ Пилот је умро у паду авиона.

Incorrect lexical choice in a fatal accident — standard Serbian normally uses погинути.

✅ Пилот је погинуо у паду авиона.

The pilot was killed in the plane crash.

  • Learn умрети — умрем — умро/умрла — умри as one irregular network.
  • Cause is normally од + genitive; the verb itself has no reflexive се.
  • Perfective present forms such as умре are future-oriented or hypothetical in subordinate clauses.
  • Standard Ijekavian has infinitive умријети, but умрем and умро do not acquire ије.
