rađati se / roditi se (to be born)

Рађати се / родити се means “be born” or, figuratively, “come into existence.” The clitic се is indispensable: without it, рађати / родити + accusative describes giving birth to something. Aspect distinguishes birth as a process or recurring phenomenon from the bounded beginning of one existence.

Principal Forms

Formрађати се (imperfective)родити се (perfective)
presentрађам се, рађаш се, рађа се, рађамо се, рађате се, рађају серодим се, родиш се, роди се, родимо се, родите се, роде се
l-participle (m./f./n. sg.; m./f./n. pl.)рађао се, рађала се, рађало се; рађали се, рађале се, рађала серодио се, родила се, родило се; родили се, родиле се, родила се
imperativeрађај се, рађајмо се, рађајте сероди се, родимо се, родите се
Future I, 1st singularрађаћу серодићу се

The spelling ђ is essential throughout рађати. The imperfective and perfective use different stems, so memorize the triangle рађати се — рађам се — рађају се and родити се — родим се — роде се.

Imperatives are morphologically possible but rarely literal in ordinary conversation: people do not normally command someone to be born. They occur in figurative, poetic, religious, or rhetorical language and must be labeled by context.

One Birth Versus a Process or Pattern

Perfective родити се identifies the boundary after which the subject exists. It is therefore the normal verb in biographies and family narratives.

Мој деда се родио у малом селу близу Ужица.

My grandfather was born in a small village near Užice.

Близнакиње су се родиле десет дана пре очекиваног термина.

The twin girls were born ten days before the expected due date.

Imperfective рађати се presents repeated births, an unfolding process, or a general pattern. It is also productive in figurative uses about ideas, movements, and states coming into being.

У тој болници се сваког дана рађа неколико беба.

Several babies are born at that hospital every day.

Добре идеје се често рађају током неформалних разговора.

Good ideas are often born during informal conversations.

The imperfective is not simply “a long birth.” It opens the event as repeated, generic, or developing; perfective родити се presents one achieved onset.

💡
For a biographical fact, default to perfective родити се or the adjective рођен/рођена. Use рађати се when births recur or when something is visibly coming into existence.

Place and Time Frames

Birth location uses the ordinary locative prepositions required by the place: у Београду, у Србији, на Златибору. A year commonly appears as 1998. године, while an exact date locating the birth is an adverbial genitive: 14. фебруара 1996. године.

Рођена сам 14. фебруара 1996. године у Крагујевцу.

I was born on February 14, 1996, in Kragujevac. (female speaker)

Кад се дете роди, родитељи добијају извод из матичне књиге рођених.

When a child is born, the parents receive a birth certificate.

Perfective present роди is future-oriented after кад; it does not describe a birth currently in progress. Use imperfective рађа се for an unfolding present when that viewpoint is genuinely relevant.

Рођен/рођена and родио/родила се

Serbian has two natural biographical patterns:

  • родио сам се / родила сам се: perfect of the reflexive verb;
  • рођен сам / рођена сам: copula plus the lexicalized passive participle “born.”

Родила сам се у Новом Саду, али сам одрасла у Сомбору.

I was born in Novi Sad, but I grew up in Sombor. (female speaker)

Писац је рођен 1978. године, а први роман је објавио са тридесет година.

The writer was born in 1978 and published his first novel at the age of thirty.

The first pattern contains reflexive се and an active l-participle agreeing with the subject. The second has рођен/рођена/рођено/рођени..., which also agrees. Both are standard; рођен је is especially compact in biographies and forms.

With and Without се

Non-reflexive родити дете means that a mother gives birth to a child. The child is accusative, and the mother is the subject.

Милица је родила здраву девојчицу рано јутрос.

Milica gave birth to a healthy baby girl early this morning.

Reflexive девојчица се родила makes the child the subject and presents its coming into existence. English can translate both with forms of give birth / be born, but Serbian participant structure is explicit.

Породити се also means “give birth” from the mother’s perspective, especially when the delivery itself is foregrounded. It is not the perfective of родити се “be born.”

Породила се у породилишту у близини своје куће.

She gave birth at a maternity hospital near her home.

Clitic Placement and the Dropped је

Се belongs to the second-position clitic cluster. In the affirmative third-person singular perfect, auxiliary је is omitted beside it.

Никола се родио у иностранству, али се као дете преселио у Србију.

Nikola was born abroad but moved to Serbia as a child.

Say Никола се родио, not Никола се је родио. Other persons keep their auxiliary: родила сам се, родили смо се. Negative third singular keeps није: није се родио. The full pattern is explained on perfect word order.

Figurative Birth and Register

The same pair describes ideas, institutions, emotions, and artistic works coming into existence. This use is neutral in thoughtful prose and common in (journalistic/academic) writing.

Покрет се родио из локалне иницијативе за заштиту реке.

The movement grew out of a local initiative to protect the river. (journalistic)

Нови приступ се рађа кроз сарадњу више истраживачких тимова.

A new approach is emerging through cooperation among several research teams. (academic)

Do not confuse родити се “come into existence” with постати “become something.” An idea can се родити; an existing proposal can постати закон.

Micro-dialogue

„Где си се родила?“ — „У Ваљеву, али се мој брат родио две године касније у Београду.“ — „Значи, нисте рођени у истом граду?“ — „Нисмо.“

‘Where were you born?’ — ‘In Valjevo, but my brother was born two years later in Belgrade.’ — ‘So you weren’t born in the same city?’ — ‘No, we weren’t.’ (female speaker in the first answer)

The dialogue contrasts reflexive perfect forms with the agreeing adjective рођени.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Choose viewpoint

Write one biographical sentence about a single birth with родити се, then a general statement about births in a hospital with рађати се.

Task 2: Change participant structure

Rewrite мајка је родила дечака so that the child becomes the subject. Then rewrite the result with рођен је and preserve masculine agreement.

Common Mistakes

❌ Ја сам родио у Нишу 2001. године.

Incorrect for ‘I was born’ — add reflexive се; without it, родити is transitive ‘give birth to.’

✅ Родио сам се у Нишу 2001. године.

I was born in Niš in 2001. (male speaker)

❌ Ана се је родила у априлу.

Incorrect — affirmative third-person singular је is omitted beside clitic се.

✅ Ана се родила у априлу, две недеље пре термина.

Ana was born in April, two weeks before her due date.

❌ Рођен сам се у старој градској болници.

Incorrect — do not combine adjective рођен сам with reflexive се.

✅ Рођен сам у старој градској болници.

I was born in the old city hospital. (male speaker)

❌ Беба се роди сада, а лекар је поред мајке.

Incorrect for an event in progress — perfective роди does not express an actual ongoing present.

✅ Беба се управо рађа, а лекар је поред мајке.

The baby is being born right now, and the doctor is beside the mother.

Key Takeaways

  • Рађати се presents repeated, generic, or unfolding birth; родити се presents one achieved beginning of existence.
  • Keep lexical се in the frame and in natural second-position order.
  • Родио/родила сам се and рођен/рођена сам are both standard biographical patterns.
  • Without се, родити дете means that the mother gives birth to the child.
  • In the affirmative third-person singular perfect, say родио се / родила се, without auxiliary је.
