The l-Participle (radni glagolski pridjev)

The l-participle, called радни глаголски придев in Ekavian Serbian (Ijekavian радни глаголски придјев, reflected in the transliterated title), is the agreeing verb form used in the perfect, conditional, Future II, and several less common compound forms. In стигла сам “I arrived” said by a woman, стигла carries feminine singular agreement while сам identifies first person.

The form is not a past tense by itself. Combine радио / радила with сам and it belongs to the perfect; combine it with бих and it belongs to the conditional; combine it with будем and it belongs to Future II. English past forms do not show this gender and number agreement, so the participle must become an active part of how you build every Serbian compound verb.

The six agreement forms

Using радити “work,” the paradigm is:

Gender / numberFormTypical subject
masculine singularрадиоон; male ја/ти
feminine singularрадилаона; female ја/ти
neuter singularрадилооно
masculine or mixed pluralрадилиони; mixed group
feminine pluralрадилеоне; all-female group
neuter pluralрадилаона; neuter plural nouns

Јуче сам радила од куће.

Yesterday I worked from home. (female speaker)

Никола је радио до касно, а Мина је отишла раније.

Nikola worked late, while Mina left earlier.

Деца су чекала испред школе.

The children waited outside the school. (neuter plural agreement)

With coordinated subjects of different genders, use masculine plural: Ана и Милош су стигли. An all-female group uses стигле. This is grammatical agreement, not a statement about social importance.

💡
For ја and ти, the auxiliary shows person but not gender. The speaker or addressee determines радио / радила: ја сам радио for a man, ја сам радила for a woman.

Why masculine singular ends in -о

The name “l-participle” reflects the -л- visible in feminine, neuter, and plural forms: радила, радило, радили. In masculine singular, historical final л became о, producing радио, not радил. Similar vowel sequences appear in читао, писао, живео, видео.

InfinitiveMasculine singularFeminine singular
читатичитаочитала
писатиписаописала
живетиживеоживела
видетивидеовидела
хтетихтеохтела

The vowel sequence is real Serbian spelling; do not insert ј into forms such as радио or видео. Ordinary orthography also does not mark pitch accent or vowel length.

Видео сам твоју поруку, али нисам стигао да одговорим.

I saw your message, but I didn’t have time to reply. (male speaker)

High-frequency irregular stems

Several basic verbs use a changed stem. These forms are too common to postpone and must be learned directly.

InfinitiveMasculineFeminineMeaning
битибиобилаbeen / was
ићиишаоишлаgone / went
доћидошаодошлаcome / arrived
рећирекаореклаsaid
моћимогаомоглаbeen able
узетиузеоузелаtaken
јестијеојелаeaten

Отишли смо пешке, али смо се вратили аутобусом.

We went on foot, but came back by bus.

Могла је да остане дуже, али је узела последњи воз.

She could have stayed longer, but she took the last train.

There is no single rule that derives ишао from ићи or дошао from доћи for a beginner. Memorize the masculine and feminine singular together; the plural then follows the same participial stem: ишли / ишле, дошли / дошле.

One participle, several compound forms

The auxiliary determines tense or mood. The participle continues to agree in every construction.

ConstructionExampleFunction
perfectнаписала самI wrote / have written
conditionalнаписала бихI would write
Future IIбудем написалаwhen/if I have written

Написала бих краћи одговор да имам више времена.

I would write a shorter reply if I had more time. (female speaker)

Кад будем написала коначну верзију, послаћу ти је.

When I have written the final version, I’ll send it to you. (female speaker)

The participle написала does not itself mean past, conditional, or future. The forms сам, бих, будем build those grammatical meanings. For Future II’s restricted subordinate use, see Future II.

Aspect remains visible

An imperfective and perfective partner form their own l-participles. Читао сам presents reading as an activity, habit, or unbounded situation; прочитао сам presents a bounded completion.

Читао сам извештај цело јутро, али га нисам завршио.

I read the report all morning, but I didn’t finish it. (male speaker)

Прочитао сам извештај и издвојио три спорна места.

I read the report through and identified three disputed points. (male speaker)

English read looks identical in both translations. Serbian uses the participle of a different aspectual verb. Agreement and aspect therefore coexist in one form: прочитала is feminine singular and perfective.

Person belongs to the auxiliary

The same participle can occur with different persons. Compare радио сам “I worked,” радио си “you worked,” and радио је “he worked.” The masculine singular participle stays constant; the auxiliary changes person.

FunctionExample
affirmativeПетар је стигао пре ручка.
negativeПетар није стигао пре ручка.
questionДа ли је Петар стигао пре ручка?

Negation changes је to није; it does not alter стигао. A woman remains стигла in all three polarity types.

Government and complement choice do not disappear

The participle keeps the lexical verb’s cases and complements. Помоћи takes a dative recipient; разговарати о takes locative; a phase or modal verb may take an infinitive or да + present according to ordinary Serbian usage.

Помогли смо комшиници да унесе колица у лифт.

We helped our neighbor bring the stroller into the elevator.

Почела је да ради у осам, а престала тек после шест.

She started working at eight and stopped only after six.

Using an l-participle does not turn комшиници into an English-style direct object and does not license да + infinitive. The subordinate verb after да is finite: да унесе, да ради.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Change agreement, not person

A man and then a woman say “I came early.” Keep first-person сам and change the participle.

Дошао сам раније. — Дошла сам раније.

I came earlier. (male speaker) — I came earlier. (female speaker)

Task 2: Build mixed and all-female plurals

Ана и Марко су стигли заједно, а Јована и Милица су дошле касније.

Ana and Marko arrived together, while Jovana and Milica came later.

Common Mistakes

Using masculine singular for every speaker

❌ „Ја сам чекала испред банке“, рекао је Милош.

Incorrect—male Miloš requires masculine singular чекао.

✅ „Ја сам чекао испред банке“, рекао је Милош.

‘I waited outside the bank,’ Miloš said.

Copying singular agreement onto a plural subject

❌ Моје сестре су отпутовала јутрос.

Incorrect—an all-female plural subject requires feminine plural отпутовале.

✅ Моје сестре су отпутовале јутрос.

My sisters left on a trip this morning.

Inserting ј into a vowel sequence

❌ Нисам видјео последњу измену.

Incorrect in the Ekavian baseline—write видео, with no ј and no mixed Ijekavian reflex.

✅ Нисам видео последњу измену.

I didn’t see the latest change. (male speaker, Ekavian)

Using the participle without the required compound-form grammar

❌ Ја написала извештај јуче.

Incorrect in neutral standard Serbian—the ordinary perfect requires the first-person auxiliary сам.

✅ Јуче сам написала извештај.

I wrote the report yesterday. (female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • The l-participle has six gender-number forms and does not itself mark person.
  • Masculine singular ends in -о; the historical -л- remains visible in forms such as радила, радили.
  • Learn frequent irregular pairs such as ишао/ишла, дошао/дошла, рекао/рекла.
  • Auxiliaries turn the same participle into the perfect, conditional, or Future II.
  • Agreement, aspect, government, and complement selection all remain active together.
