Serbian учити / научити covers territory that English divides among study, learn, and teach. With a learner as subject, imperfective учити presents study or learning in progress, while perfective научити presents acquired knowledge or mastery. With a teacher as subject, the same verbs can mean “teach,” and the complement pattern identifies who receives the knowledge.
This semantic flexibility makes the constructional frame essential. Учити српски, учити за испит, and учити децу српски / учити децу правилном изговору do not describe the same participant structure, even though English may use familiar school vocabulary for all three. The event-boundary logic follows the broader contrast between imperfective and perfective meaning.
Studying versus having learned
With the learner as subject, учити presents the activity and научити its successful result.
Учимо српски већ осам месеци и сада лакше разумемо вести.
We have been studying Serbian for eight months, and now we understand the news more easily.
Нисам научила све нове речи, али сам разумела главну идеју текста.
I did not learn all the new words, but I understood the main idea of the text. (female speaker)
The first sentence measures an open process. The second evaluates whether the words entered the learner’s knowledge. Perfective научити does not merely mean that studying stopped; it asserts an attained learning result.
Свако вече учи по једну лекцију, а викендом понавља старо градиво.
Every evening he studies one lesson, and on weekends he reviews earlier material.
Кад научиш овај образац, лакше ћеш препознавати падеже.
When you learn this pattern, you will recognize the cases more easily.
Perfective present научиш is future-oriented after кад. The main-clause consequence depends on reaching the learning boundary.
Complete present paradigms
Both verbs belong to the -им class. Prefix на- leaves the present endings unchanged.
| Person | учити (imperfective) | научити (perfective) |
|---|---|---|
| ја | учим | научим |
| ти | учиш | научиш |
| он / она / оно | учи | научи |
| ми | учимо | научимо |
| ви | учите | научите |
| они / оне / она | уче | науче |
Шта тренутно учиш на курсу програмирања?
What are you currently studying in the programming course?
Ако научимо пречице на тастатури, радићемо много брже.
If we learn the keyboard shortcuts, we will work much faster.
Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark lexical pitch accent or vowel length. Store учити — учим — уче and научити — научим — науче as practical principal forms.
L-participles, future, and imperatives
| Form | учити | научити |
|---|---|---|
| l-participle, m. / f. / n. singular | учио / учила / учило | научио / научила / научило |
| l-participle, m. / f. / n. plural | учили / училе / учила | научили / научиле / научила |
| Future I, 1st singular | учићу | научићу |
| imperative, 2nd sg. / 1st pl. / 2nd pl. | учи / учимо / учите | научи / научимо / научите |
The first-person plural present and imperative of учити are both written учимо; context distinguishes “we study” from “let us study.”
Учи редовно, уместо да све оставиш за последње вече.
Study regularly instead of leaving everything until the final evening.
Научи ова три броја напамет пре сутрашње смене.
Learn these three numbers by heart before tomorrow’s shift.
Imperfective учи prescribes an ongoing habit. Perfective научи requests an attained result.
The learner frame: accusative material and за + accusative purpose
The subject matter or item being learned is commonly accusative: учити језик, учити лекцију, научити песму. A forthcoming assessment appears after за + accusative.
Јелена учи биологију за пријемни испит.
Jelena is studying biology for the entrance exam.
Деца су научила песму за школску приредбу.
The children learned the song for the school performance.
In the first sentence, биологију is the material and за пријемни испит gives the purpose. In the second, perfective научила су asserts that the song was learned, not merely practiced.
Serbian often uses учити where English prefers study, and научити where English prefers learn or memorize. There is no single English gloss that replaces the aspect decision.
The teacher frame: учити некога нешто / нечему
With a teacher as subject, the learner is accusative. A school subject or language can also be accusative, as in учити децу српски, while a skill or quality commonly appears in the dative, as in учити децу правилном изговору. A да + present clause can name the skill as an action.
Она учи странце српски, а колега их учи правилном изговору.
She teaches foreigners Serbian, while her colleague teaches them correct pronunciation.
Наставница учи ученике правилном изговору.
The teacher teaches the students correct pronunciation.
Деда ме је научио да поправљам бицикле.
Grandpa taught me how to repair bicycles.
In учити странце српски, both learner and subject matter are accusative; in учити ученике правилном изговору, accusative marks the learner and dative marks the skill. In научио ме је да поправљам, accusative clitic ме identifies the learner, and the finite complement identifies the acquired skill.
Aspect changes the teaching claim. Imperfective учила ме је can describe instruction without guaranteeing mastery. Perfective научила ме је normally presents the teaching as successful.
Мајка ме је месецима учила да пливам, а научио сам тек на летовању.
My mother taught me to swim for months, but I finally learned on vacation. (male speaker)
The first clause profiles prolonged instruction; the second presents the learner’s result. Serbian can keep the teacher and learner perspectives separate inside one situation.
Reflexive учити се is not the everyday default
Ordinary “study/learn” uses are not reflexive: учим математику, not a form with се. Standard Serbian also has учити се + dative, especially in (formal), proverbial, or educational language, meaning to train oneself in or become habituated to a quality. Some sentences with се can instead be passive.
Одмалена се учимо стрпљењу и одговорности.
From an early age, we learn patience and responsibility. (formal/educational)
This marked construction takes dative стрпљењу и одговорности. For an ordinary language-learning statement, the unmarked accusative frame remains учити српски. Do not attach се mechanically because English learn can sound internally directed.
Related verbs specialize the kind of learning
Проучавати / проучити means study or examine something analytically and in depth; it is not the ordinary pair for learning a language or lesson. Подучавати / подучити focuses explicitly on teaching. Изучавати is common in (academic) contexts for sustained systematic study.
Истраживачки тим проучава узроке загађења подземних вода.
The research team is studying the causes of groundwater pollution. (academic)
Using проучава here signals investigation, not a student trying to memorize course material.
Micro-dialogue
— Јеси ли научила презентацију напамет? — Нисам; учим главне тачке, али желим да говорим природно.
— Have you learned the presentation by heart? — No; I am learning the main points, but I want to speak naturally. (female respondent)
The question tests mastery with научила. The answer returns to the open process with учим.
Common Mistakes
Adding се to ordinary studying
❌ Свако вече се учим српски преко интернета.
Incorrect — ordinary language study uses transitive ‘учити’ with an accusative object, without ‘се’.
✅ Свако вече учим српски преко интернета.
Every evening I study Serbian online.
Confusing activity with mastery
❌ Научила сам за испит цело поподне, али још не разумем последње поглавље.
Incorrect for an unfinished afternoon of studying — use imperfective ‘учила сам’.
✅ Учила сам за испит цело поподне, али још не разумем последње поглавље.
I studied for the exam all afternoon, but I still do not understand the final chapter. (female speaker)
Putting the learner in the dative
❌ Тренер учи деци правилну технику дисања.
Incorrect — the people being taught are accusative: ‘децу’.
✅ Тренер учи децу правилној техници дисања.
The coach teaches the children proper breathing technique.
Assuming teaching guarantees learning
❌ Учила га је да вози, зато глагол већ значи да је сигурно научио.
Incorrect — imperfective ‘учила га је’ describes instruction but does not guarantee successful learning.
✅ Учила га је да вози, али још није научио.
She taught him to drive, but he has not learned yet.
Practice
Task 1: Change perspectives
Describe one driving lesson three ways: the instructor’s ongoing teaching with учити, the learner’s ongoing process with учити, and the learner’s achieved skill with научити. Make the learner accusative only in the teacher frame.
Task 2: Build the form set
Give the first-person singular, third-person plural, feminine l-participle, Future I first-person singular, and second-person singular imperative of учити and научити. Then use научим in an ако clause.
Key Takeaways
- With a learner as subject, учити means study/learn in progress and научити means learn successfully.
