Будити се / пробудити се is the reflexive aspect pair for waking up. Imperfective будити се presents repeated waking or the process of emerging from sleep; perfective пробудити се selects one transition into wakefulness. The clitic се is part of the intransitive frame and must stay in natural Serbian clitic position.
Principal forms
Both verbs have an -и- present stem. The third-person plural ends in -е, not -у.

Future I is будићу се, будићеш се, будиће се, будићемо се, будићете се, будиће се and пробудићу се, пробудићеш се, пробудиће се, пробудићемо се, пробудићете се, пробудиће се; with a subject host, say ја ћу се пробудити.
Последњих дана се будим пре будилника и не могу поново да заспим.
For the last few days, I've been waking before the alarm and can't fall asleep again.
Пробудио сам се кад је неко затворио улазна врата.
I woke up when someone closed the front door. (male speaker)
The first example gives a repeated pattern; the second selects one completed transition.
Aspect: process, repetition, and one transition
Imperfective будити се is natural with habitual adverbials and when the transition is viewed from within.
Док се полако будила после операције, медицинска сестра јој је постављала кратка питања.
While she was slowly waking after the operation, the nurse was asking her short questions.
Perfective пробудити се presents the eyes-open or awareness-returned boundary:
Чим се пробудиш, попиј мало воде пре кафе.
As soon as you wake up, drink a little water before coffee.
Perfective present пробудиш is normal after чим with future or habitual reference; it does not describe waking in progress now.
The related perfective разбудити се means become fully alert, often after already waking. It adds a lexical result and is not a neutral substitute.
Пробудила сам се у шест, али сам се разбудила тек после туширања.
I woke up at six, but I didn't become fully alert until after showering. (female speaker)
Reflexive intransitive versus transitive causative
With се, the sleeper undergoes the transition and is nominative:
Дете се пробудило због грмљавине, али није заплакало.
The child woke up because of the thunder, but did not cry.
Without се, transitive будити / пробудити means wake somebody. The person awakened is accusative.
Комшијин пас ме је пробудио лајањем у пола пет.
The neighbor's dog woke me up by barking at half past four.
Here пас is the nominative causer, accusative clitic ме is the affected sleeper, and masculine пробудио agrees with пас. Compare reflexive пробудио сам се, where the sleeper is subject.
Немој да будиш Милу; целе ноћи је радила.
Don't wake Mila; she worked all night.
The imperfective after a negative command prohibits the activity of disturbing her sleep. Немој да је пробудиш would warn against reaching the result “cause her to wake.”
Clitic position and the missing је
Се belongs in the second-position clitic cluster. In an affirmative third-person singular perfect, auxiliary је is omitted beside се:
Ана се пробудила неколико минута пре поласка воза.
Ana woke up a few minutes before the train departed.
Do not write Ана се је пробудила. First and second person retain their auxiliaries: пробудио сам се, пробудила си се.
In Future I, the future auxiliary precedes се when it has a host:
Сутра ћемо се пробудити раније да избегнемо гужву на путу.
Tomorrow we'll wake up earlier to avoid traffic on the road.
The fused form is also standard: пробудићемо се. The perfect-word-order guide explains why third-person је behaves specially with се.
Time and cause frames
Clock time takes у + accusative: пробудити се у седам. Causes commonly appear with због + genitive, while the thing that directly wakes someone can be the transitive subject.
Пробудили смо се у зору због мириса дима из ходника.
We woke up at dawn because of the smell of smoke from the hallway.
Из + genitive can name the state left behind in expressions such as пробудити се из дубоког сна.
Тешко се пробудио из дубоког сна и неколико секунди није знао где је.
He woke with difficulty from a deep sleep and for several seconds did not know where he was.
Wake up is not get up
English morning accounts often blur wake up and get up. Serbian keeps пробудити се and устати separate.
Пробудила се у седам, али је устала тек кад је зазвонио други аларм.
She woke up at seven but did not get up until the second alarm rang.
After се пробудила, later auxiliary је belongs to nonreflexive устала је and is retained. The order of events is explained further on the getting-up page.
Micro-dialogue
— Шта те је пробудило? — Камион испред зграде. Обично се не будим тако лако.
— What woke you up? — A truck in front of the building. I don't usually wake that easily.
The question is transitive: interrogative шта is the causer and те the sleeper. The reply then uses reflexive imperfective се не будим for a general tendency.
Common Mistakes
Dropping reflexive се in “wake up”
❌ Сваког дана будим у шест без аларма.
Incorrect for intransitive ‘wake up’ — the verb requires reflexive се.
✅ Сваког дана се будим у шест без аларма.
I wake up at six every day without an alarm.
Adding се to the causative frame
❌ Бука се пробудила бебу.
Incorrect — when noise wakes someone, пробудити is transitive and бебу is accusative; remove се.
✅ Бука је пробудила бебу.
The noise woke the baby.
Keeping је beside се
❌ Јелена се је пробудила чим је свануло.
Incorrect — affirmative third-person singular је is omitted beside reflexive се.
✅ Јелена се пробудила чим је свануло.
Jelena woke up as soon as day broke.
Confusing waking with getting up
❌ Пробудио сам се из кревета и отишао у кухињу.
Incorrect for leaving the bed — пробудити се is waking; use устати из кревета for getting up.
✅ Устао сам из кревета и отишао у кухињу.
I got out of bed and went to the kitchen. (male speaker)
Practice
Task 1: Switch transitivity
Rewrite “The alarm woke me” as “I woke up because of the alarm.” Then change “The children woke up” into “The noise woke the children,” adjusting се, case, and agreement.
Task 2: Build the morning sequence
Use заспати, спавати, пробудити се, and устати in four connected clauses. Add one repeated waking pattern with imperfective будити се.
Key Takeaways
- Будити се presents repeated or developing waking; пробудити се presents one transition.
- Intransitive “wake up” requires се; transitive “wake someone” takes an accusative object without се.
- Keep natural clitic order: пробудио сам се, but Ана се пробудила with no adjacent је.
- Пробудити се means wake up; разбудити се become fully alert; устати get out of bed.
