Спавати means “sleep” or “be asleep”; заспати means “fall asleep.” They belong to the same lexical field, but they are not a simple aspectual pair. The second verb adds an inchoative meaning—a transition into sleep—rather than presenting the endpoint of the same sleeping activity.
Forms: a state and an entry into it
Спавати is imperfective and has a regular -ам present. Perfective заспати has the present stem заспим, not an invented заспам. Its past participle returns to -спао/-спала.
| Form | спавати “sleep” | заспати “fall asleep” |
|---|---|---|
| present 1sg | спавам | заспим |
| present 2sg | спаваш | заспиш |
| present 3sg | спава | заспи |
| present plural | спавамо, спавате, спавају | заспимо, заспите, заспе |
| past participle | спавао, спавала | заспао, заспала |
| imperative | спавај, спавајте | заспи, заспите |
| Future I | спаваћу | заспаћу |
Деца већ спавају, зато говори тише.
The children are already asleep, so speak more quietly.
Заспала сам у аутобусу и промашила своју станицу.
I fell asleep on the bus and missed my stop. (female speaker)
The first sentence describes a state in progress. The second identifies the moment the speaker entered that state. English also distinguishes sleep from fall asleep, but learners sometimes misread the Serbian prefix as a generic perfective marker.
Duration and location with спавати
Спавати is intransitive: it does not take a person or thing as a direct object. A duration such as осам сати is an accusative measure phrase, not an affected object.
Ноћас сам спавао само четири сата.
I slept for only four hours last night. (male speaker)
Беба обично спава два пута током дана.
The baby usually sleeps twice during the day.
Location uses the ordinary prepositional case: у + locative for being inside, на + locative for being on or at, and код + genitive for staying at someone’s place.
Током реновирања спавамо код пријатеља.
During the renovation, we’re sleeping at friends’ place.
На планини смо спавали у малој дрвеној кући.
In the mountains, we slept in a small wooden house.
In neutral modern Serbian, спавати can also mean “have sexual relations” in спавати с неким (informal, euphemistic). Context normally disambiguates it, but learners should know why a phrase about sleeping “with” a person can carry more than a literal room-sharing meaning.
Заспати and the imperfective заспивати
For the process or repeated event of falling asleep, Serbian has the secondary imperfective заспивати: заспивам, заспиваш; заспивао/заспивала. It preserves the meaning “enter sleep” rather than replacing general спавати.
У последње време тешко заспивам без обзира на то колико сам уморан.
Lately I have difficulty falling asleep no matter how tired I am. (male speaker)
Заспала је пре него што се филм завршио.
She fell asleep before the film ended.
The first describes a recurring process and therefore uses заспивам. The second presents one transition and uses заспала је. Because there is no reflexive се, the third-person singular auxiliary је remains.
Do not treat every prefixed sleep verb as a neutral aspect partner. Одспавати means sleep for a bounded while, преспавати can mean spend the night or sleep through something, and наспавати се means get enough sleep. Each prefix contributes a lexical boundary.
Одспаваћу пола сата пре ноћне смене.
I’ll sleep for half an hour before the night shift.
Наспавала сам се и сада могу нормално да радим.
I got enough sleep, and now I can work normally. (female speaker)
This network illustrates why related verbs should be learned by meaning, as explained on aspectual pairs versus related verbs.
The impersonal desire construction: спава ми се
Спава ми се means “I feel sleepy” or literally “sleep appeals to me.” It is an impersonal construction with the experiencer in dative and invariant third-person спава, plus се.
| Experiencer | Serbian | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ја | спава ми се | I feel sleepy |
| ти | спава ти се | you feel sleepy |
| он / она | спава му се / спава јој се | he/she feels sleepy |
| ми / ви / они | спава нам се / спава вам се / спава им се | we/you/they feel sleepy |
После ручка ми се увек спава, али данас имам састанак.
I’m always sleepy after lunch, but today I have a meeting.
Не спава ми се још; остаћу будан до краја утакмице.
I’m not sleepy yet; I’ll stay awake until the end of the match. (male speaker)
This does not mean “I am sleeping.” Спавам reports the state; спава ми се reports an inclination or bodily urge. Serbian uses the same pattern with једе ми се “I feel like eating” and иде ми се “I feel like going.”
Micro-dialogue
— Јеси ли добро спавао? — Јесам, али сам заспао тек после поноћи.
— Did you sleep well? — Yes, but I didn’t fall asleep until after midnight. (male addressee and speaker)
The question evaluates the sleeping state; the reply separately locates entry into that state. Using спавао twice would lose that distinction.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Choose the event
Say that the child fell asleep at nine and then slept for ten hours.
Дете је заспало у девет, а затим је спавало десет сати.
The child fell asleep at nine and then slept for ten hours.
Task 2: Express a bodily inclination
Tell a friend you feel sleepy because you slept badly.
Спава ми се јер сам ноћас лоше спавала.
I’m sleepy because I slept badly last night. (female speaker)
Common Mistakes
Treating заспати as “finish sleeping”
❌ Заспала сам у седам и онда устала из кревета.
Incorrect for the intended meaning—заспала сам means ‘I fell asleep,’ not ‘I finished sleeping.’
✅ Пробудила сам се у седам и онда устала из кревета.
I woke up at seven and then got out of bed. (female speaker)
Building the wrong present stem
❌ Обично заспам чим легнем.
Incorrect—the present of заспати is заспим; repeated falling asleep is more naturally заспивам.
✅ Обично заспим чим легнем.
I usually fall asleep as soon as I lie down.
Conjugating the impersonal predicate
❌ После ручка спавам ми се.
Incorrect—this desire construction uses invariant спава plus dative ми and се.
✅ После ручка ми се спава.
I feel sleepy after lunch.
Dropping the auxiliary from a nonreflexive perfect
❌ Милица заспала на каучу.
Incorrect in neutral conversation—the perfect of nonreflexive заспати retains auxiliary је.
✅ Милица је заспала на каучу.
Milica fell asleep on the couch.
Key Takeaways
- Спавати names the state; заспати names entry into it, so they are related but not a simple pair.
- Memorize заспати — заспим — заспао/заспала.
- Use заспивати for repeated or developing entry into sleep.
- Спава ми се expresses sleepiness with a dative experiencer; it does not mean спавам.
