Јављати се — јавити се covers getting in touch, answering, responding, or making oneself known. The pair is lexical and reflexive: се is part of the entry. The closely related nonreflexive јавити means “tell, notify, let someone know,” so adding or removing се changes the participant structure.
For the broader contrast between lexical, reciprocal, and truly self-directed се, see reflexive verbs.
Forms of the aspect pair
Јављати се is imperfective: ongoing, repeated, or habitual contact. Јавити се is perfective: one successful act of contacting, answering, or responding.
While he was working abroad, he got in touch with us every week.
Јавићу ти се чим добијем резултате.
I’ll get in touch with you as soon as I receive the results.
Perfective present forms such as добијем and јавим се normally occur with future or conditional reference; Future I јавићу се likewise promises one contact. For an action happening now, use imperfective: Сад се јављам клијенту “I’m contacting the client now.”
Contacting someone: dative
The person contacted is dative: јавити се мајци, лекару, колегама or the clitics ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им.
Нико ми се није јавио после разговора за посао.
No one got back to me after the job interview.
Јавите се рецепцији ако вам затреба додатни пешкир.
Contact reception if you need an extra towel. (formal or plural addressee)
English says contact me with a direct object. Serbian uses dative ми/мени, not accusative ме/мене, with this sense of јавити се.
Answering and responding: на + accusative
Use на + accusative for what is answered or responded to: на телефон, позив, поруку, мејл, оглас, конкурс.
Звала сам три пута, али се нико није јавио на телефон.
I called three times, but no one answered the phone. (female speaker)
На оглас се јавило више од сто кандидата.
More than a hundred candidates responded to the advertisement.
For formally submitting an application, пријавити се на конкурс is often more precise than јавити се на конкурс. The latter can mean respond or express interest; the former means register/apply. Neither variety is inherently better—the choice reflects the action.
In a classroom or meeting, јавити се also means raise one’s hand or volunteer to speak.
Милица се прва јавила да представи резултате групе.
Milica was the first to volunteer to present the group’s results.
Јавити versus јавити се
Nonreflexive јавити takes a dative recipient plus information, often an accusative noun or a да clause. Compare the minimal pair:
Јави ми тачно време поласка.
Let me know the exact departure time.
Јави ми се кад стигнеш у хотел.
Get in touch with me when you arrive at the hotel.
The first asks for information; the second asks for contact. Јавити да… is especially common: Јавили су нам да је лет отказан “They informed us that the flight was canceled.”
Секретарица нам је јавила да је састанак померен.
The secretary informed us that the meeting had been moved.
Clitic order and omission of је
Both the dative pronoun and reflexive се belong to the clitic cluster. Dative comes before се: ми се, ти се, му се, јој се.
После две недеље ми се коначно јавио власник стана.
After two weeks, the landlord finally got back to me.
In the third-person singular perfect, auxiliary је is omitted when се is present: Она ми се јавила, not Она ми се је јавила. First and second person auxiliaries remain.
Јавио сам јој се пре него што сам кренуо на пут.
I got in touch with her before I set off. (male speaker)
Ивана нам се јавила из воза.
Ivana got in touch with us from the train.
Compare nonreflexive јавила нам је: without се, third-person је remains.
Ивана нам је јавила број вагона.
Ivana told us the carriage number.
Micro-dialogue
— Зашто ми се јуче ниси јавио? — Телефон ми се испразнио, па сам ти послао поруку кад сам стигао кући.
— Why didn’t you get in touch with me yesterday? — My phone died, so I sent you a message when I got home. (male addressee and speaker)
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Choose reflexive or nonreflexive
Ask someone first to let you know the result, then to contact you afterward.
Јави ми резултат, па ми се јави после састанка.
Let me know the result, then get in touch with me after the meeting.
Task 2: Build the third-person perfect cluster
Докторка ми се јавила рано јутрос.
The doctor got back to me early this morning.
Common Mistakes
Using accusative for the person contacted
❌ Јави ме се кад завршиш.
Incorrect—the contacted person is dative, and се remains the reflexive clitic.
✅ Јави ми се кад завршиш.
Get in touch with me when you finish.
Retaining је beside се
❌ Ана ми се је јавила после ручка.
Incorrect—in the third-person singular perfect, је is omitted beside се.
✅ Ана ми се јавила после ручка.
Ana got in touch with me after lunch.
Dropping се and changing the meaning
❌ Јави ми кад стигнеш, па ћемо разговарати.
Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘get in touch with me’—without се, јави ми means ‘let me know/tell me.’
✅ Јави ми се кад стигнеш, па ћемо разговарати.
Get in touch with me when you arrive, and then we’ll talk.
Using locative after responsive на
❌ Нико се није јавио на огласу.
Incorrect for responding to an advertisement—responsive на takes accusative: на оглас.
✅ Нико се није јавио на оглас.
No one responded to the advertisement.
Key Takeaways
- Јављати се is repeated/ongoing contact; јавити се is one bounded response or contact.
- The contacted person is dative; the call, message, or advertisement answered follows на + accusative.
- Јави ми means “let me know”; Јави ми се means “get in touch with me.”
- Use јавила ми се, with no third-person auxiliary је beside се.
